Knox Women’s Football Club a step closer to changing rooms at Schultz Reserve

KNOX Women’s Football Club players have scored a win off the field, with a State Government cash boost to upgrade change rooms at their home ground.

The growing club, which fields a team in the VFL Women’s League, was desperate for its home ground, Schultz Reserve in Wantirna, to be upgraded.

The club has only one big change room, separated in the middle by a roller door.

In a press release this week, the State Government said it would partner with Knox Council to give $100,000 to convert two internal shower and toilet rooms at the reserve, “to become more welcoming and accessible for female participants”.

The council is set to contribute the other $100,000 needed for the project.

At a council meeting earlier this year, councillors agreed to allocate money from the 2017-18 capital works budget for five projects, including the Schultz Reserve upgrade, if they got State Government funding.

Mayor Darren Pearce said developing improved and female-friendly amenities was a key priority for council.

Cr Jackson Taylor said the project was “a great start” to supporting the development of women’s footy in Knox.

Captain of the club’s VFL side Mel Kuys previously told Leader they desperately needed new change rooms and better lighting at the ground.

There is no fence around the ground, no coaches’ box, and no space for the club to hold functions and fundraisers.
