Crayfish bonanza for Bunbury fishers ahead of 'white run'

When you see the size of the crayfish these blokes are catching, it's a wonder they didn't sink their boat on the way back.

A group of divers fishing off Bunbury have posted video footage of them plucking enormous western rock lobsters from the sea bed - some so big they barely fit inside their catch bags.

Diving at a secret spot they call 'The Coliseum,' Gary C and his mates can be seen swimming close to a stretch of reef where scores of large crayfish peer out, their huge claws, antennas and tails a tempting target.

The divers seek out the biggest ones they can find and sweep them into bags - a great catch for their efforts.

Divers across Perth and the south of the state are watching what divers catch closely as the 'white run' approaches- the time of year when crayfish shed their red shells to reveal a new white and pink mottle.

The crays move from shallow water to deep, and Matt Gillett from Recfishwest said the white run is when up to 80 per cent of the total catches for the season are made.

"Last year down at the Hillarys boat ramp we had a line of cars and trailers from the water to the top of Hepburn Avenue, and it took at least an hour on average for people to get their boats out of the water waiting in line," he said.

"It really is the easiest fishing. The suspense is really building and it's mainly announced through word of mouth, so we'll be keeping a watch on things."

As the big catches continue to come in, there has been a spate boat seizures in recent weeks related to fishers helping themselves to cray pots that don't belong to them.

Anyone with information about illegal fishing activities is urged not to get involved, but to carefully observe what they see and call FishWatch on 1800 815 507.
