Community backlash over application for 24-hour Puma fuel station in Dunsborough

Dunsborough locals are furious Puma Energy will reapply for approval of a service station on Dunn Bay Road, only this time disguised as a convenience store.

An application to build a third service station in Dunsborough's town centre has been unanimously rejected twice by planning authorities.

However, developers DCSC and Puma Energy will go back to the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) on February 1 to seek approval for a 24-hour "convenience store", which has sparked outrage in the community.

The proposal before SAT is for an application for a convenience store, rather than a service station - only the convenience store plan happens to feature a six-bay petrol station.

The city's planning scheme defines a convenience store as a retail space for the sale of goods commonly found in supermarkets, delicatessens and newsagents, but also includes the sale of petrol.

If the application succeeds there would be three fuel stations in the centre of town all within a short walking distance.

Several complaints have been made on social media and the creation of a website Puma2go devoted to stopping the development from passing the South-West Joint Development Assessment Panel.

The site, headlined Nightmare on Main Street, includes information about the development and a link to a petition against the development - which has more than 1000 signatures.

Prominent Dunsborough-based photographer Christian Fletcher told Radio 6PR the main issue of an extra petrol station in that area would be increased traffic congestion, as vehicles, boats and trailers already congest the area.

"We are not against the developers and we are not against Puma itself, we are just against where they are trying to put this petrol station."

Mr Fletcher said locals would be welcoming of a Puma station in the Dunsborough if they developed in the industrial area, not the centre of town.

A protest rally against the development, Wake Up Dunsborough, will be starting at 10am Saturday at Lions Park.
