U.S. officials say China stole a U.S. Navy underwater drone in the South China Sea. Officials say it happened at the same moment the USNS Bowditch, a survey ship, was about to retrieve it. The Hill reports the incident happened Thursday around noon local time in international waters off the coast of the Philippines. U.S. officials told The Hill a Chinese ship was following the Bowditch and dropped a boat into the water and grabbed the drone. The Bowditch crew called the Chinese crew and asked for the drone back -- the Chinese ship confirmed they received the message, but sailed away with the drone.
Chinese officials say the islands in the South China Sea are China's territory. They say what they did to the drone fits under international law and China was acting on its own territory at the time -- it has nothing to do with militarisation.

A Chinese Navy ship stole an American underwater research drone in a South China Sea area contested by the Chinese and the Philippines, two U.S. defense officials told.
The incident occurred around noon Thursday local time approximately 40 miles west of the Philippines and about 150 miles from Scarborough Shoal. For days, the Chinese ship had been shadowing the American ship USNS Bowditch, which deployed the drone, a Slocum Glider.

Chinese state media announces that China will return an underwater U.S. drone seized by a naval vessel this week in the South China Sea.
But Beijing is complaining that Washington has hyped up the issue -- publicly.
The Pentagon went public with its complaint and said it had secured a deal to get the drone back.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to take an aggressive approach with China --jumped on the unusual drone seizure with a pair of provocative tweets -- accusing Beijing of stealing the equipment.

Is Chinese seizure of US underwater drone a signal to President Trump? Is Fox News Reporting This?
We talk a lot about rising tensions in the South China Sea, but generally in abstract terms.
In the last few days we have seen two concrete examples to focus minds.
Earlier this week, a US think-tank published satellite imagery it said showed China had deployed significant new weapons systems to artificial islands it has built in the disputed waters.
The Asia Maritime Initiative said Beijing appeared to have installed anti-aircraft and missile defences, as well as various gun emplacements, despite President Xi Jinping's repeated promises not to militarise the region.

China's Ministry of Defence responded defiantly, insisting the installations were "legitimate and lawful" and "mainly for defence and self-protection", before warning, "if someone makes a show of force at your front door, would you not ready your slingshot?"
For China this is not just rhetoric.
It considers the South China Sea to be its strategic 'front door' and its neighbourhood, and resents what it sees as the US Navy repeatedly showing up uninvited.
Then came Thursday's close encounter over the drone.
According to the Pentagon, the USNS Bowditch was 50 nautical miles off the Philippines coast being shadowed by a Chinese naval vessel, which is not unusual in these waters, while preparing to retrieve an unmanned underwater drone.
As it did so, the Chinese warship moved within 500 yards, launched a small craft, and seized the drone.
The Americans made repeated radio demands to return the drone, but the Chinese navy ship sailed away in silence.
A formal protest has now been raised at the diplomatic level.
"It is ours, it is clearly marked as ours and we would like it back," a Pentagon spokesman said.
China's foreign ministry said the issue was being handled through military channels and declined to elaborate, but the state-controlled Global Times newspaper offered more detail.
A Chinese naval vessel had discovered "unidentified equipment" and checked it to avoid navigational safety issues, the paper explained.
China had already received a claim for the equipment from the US side, it said, and believed the issue would be "smoothly resolved".
So apparently we are supposed to believe that the presence of the US Navy ship, the 'property of the US' markings, and the repeated US radio demands to return the drone, offered no clues as to the unidentified equipment's identity.
Or maybe we're not.
Maybe this is exactly what it looks like - a warning as to how serious this could get, and how rapidly, if President-elect Trump continues to threaten what China sees as its core interests.
It's not difficult to see how this could have escalated: two nations' warships, within 500 yards of each other in contested waters, one apparently in the process of seizing the other's military property.
Mr Trump has talked a lot about getting tough on China and showing Beijing who is boss, tossing around threats to Taiwan, another of Beijing's core interests, in the process.
Maybe this is China's response.

CHINA has "unlawfully" seized a US underwater drone carrying out research in the South China Sea, the US Pentagon has confirmed.
An underwater drone deployed by an American oceanographic vessel to carry out unclassified research has been seized by the Chinese Navy in international waters in the South China Sea.
The incident took place northwest of Subic Bay just as the USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, was about to retrieve the unmanned, underwater vehicle (UUV).
The incident has triggered a formal demand from the US for the drone’s return, according to a defence official.
The US research vessel had tried to retrieve the glider, but the Chinese ship - which US officials believe was already shadowing the USNS Bowditch - swooped in and “unlawfully retrieved it.

We talk a lot about rising tensions in the South China Sea, but generally in abstract terms.
In the last few days we have seen two concrete examples to focus minds.
Earlier this week, a US think-tank published satellite imagery it said showed China had deployed significant new weapons systems to artificial islands it has built in the disputed waters.
The Asia Maritime Initiative said Beijing appeared to have installed anti-aircraft and missile defences, as well as various gun emplacements, despite President Xi Jinping's repeated promises not to militarise the region.
:: Trump attacks 'unpresidented' drone seizure
China's Ministry of Defence responded defiantly, insisting the installations were "legitimate and lawful" and "mainly for defence and self-protection", before warning, "if someone makes a show of force at your front door, would you not ready your slingshot?"
For China this is not just rhetoric.
It considers the South China Sea to be its strategic 'front door' and its neighbourhood, and resents what it sees as the US Navy repeatedly showing up uninvited.
Then came Thursday's close encounter over the drone.
According to the Pentagon, the USNS Bowditch was 50 nautical miles off the Philippines coast being shadowed by a Chinese naval vessel, which is not unusual in these waters, while preparing to retrieve an unmanned underwater drone.
As it did so, the Chinese warship moved within 500 yards, launched a small craft, and seized the drone.
The Americans made repeated radio demands to return the drone, but the Chinese navy ship sailed away in silence.
A formal protest has now been raised at the diplomatic level.
"It is ours, it is clearly marked as ours and we would like it back," a Pentagon spokesman said.
China's foreign ministry said the issue was being handled through military channels and declined to elaborate, but the state-controlled Global Times newspaper offered more detail.
A Chinese naval vessel had discovered "unidentified equipment" and checked it to avoid navigational safety issues, the paper explained.
China had already received a claim for the equipment from the US side, it said, and believed the issue would be "smoothly resolved".
So apparently we are supposed to believe that the presence of the US Navy ship, the 'property of the US' markings, and the repeated US radio demands to return the drone, offered no clues as to the unidentified equipment's identity.
Or maybe we're not.
Maybe this is exactly what it looks like - a warning as to how serious this could get, and how rapidly, if President-elect Trump continues to threaten what China sees as its core interests.
It's not difficult to see how this could have escalated: two nations' warships, within 500 yards of each other in contested waters, one apparently in the process of seizing the other's military property.
Mr Trump has talked a lot about getting tough on China and showing Beijing who is boss, tossing around threats to Taiwan, another of Beijing's core interests, in the process.
Maybe this is China's response.

We talk a lot about rising tensions in the South China Sea, but generally in abstract terms.
In the last few days we have seen two concrete examples to focus minds.
Earlier this week, a US think-tank published satellite imagery it said showed China had deployed significant new weapons systems to artificial islands it has built in the disputed waters.
The Asia Maritime Initiative said Beijing appeared to have installed anti-aircraft and missile defences, as well as various gun emplacements, despite President Xi Jinping's repeated promises not to militarise the region.
:: Trump attacks 'unpresidented' drone seizure
China's Ministry of Defence responded defiantly, insisting the installations were "legitimate and lawful" and "mainly for defence and self-protection", before warning, "if someone makes a show of force at your front door, would you not ready your slingshot?"
For China this is not just rhetoric.
It considers the South China Sea to be its strategic 'front door' and its neighbourhood, and resents what it sees as the US Navy repeatedly showing up uninvited.
Then came Thursday's close encounter over the drone.
According to the Pentagon, the USNS Bowditch was 50 nautical miles off the Philippines coast being shadowed by a Chinese naval vessel, which is not unusual in these waters, while preparing to retrieve an unmanned underwater drone.
As it did so, the Chinese warship moved within 500 yards, launched a small craft, and seized the drone.
The Americans made repeated radio demands to return the drone, but the Chinese navy ship sailed away in silence.
A formal protest has now been raised at the diplomatic level.
"It is ours, it is clearly marked as ours and we would like it back," a Pentagon spokesman said.
China's foreign ministry said the issue was being handled through military channels and declined to elaborate, but the state-controlled Global Times newspaper offered more detail.
A Chinese naval vessel had discovered "unidentified equipment" and checked it to avoid navigational safety issues, the paper explained.
China had already received a claim for the equipment from the US side, it said, and believed the issue would be "smoothly resolved".
So apparently we are supposed to believe that the presence of the US Navy ship, the 'property of the US' markings, and the repeated US radio demands to return the drone, offered no clues as to the unidentified equipment's identity.
Or maybe we're not.
Maybe this is exactly what it looks like - a warning as to how serious this could get, and how rapidly, if President-elect Trump continues to threaten what China sees as its core interests.
It's not difficult to see how this could have escalated: two nations' warships, within 500 yards of each other in contested waters, one apparently in the process of seizing the other's military property.
Mr Trump has talked a lot about getting tough on China and showing Beijing who is boss, tossing around threats to Taiwan, another of Beijing's core interests, in the process.
Maybe this is China's response.
