This fall, Interference Archive presents an exhibition highlighting some of the lesser-known objects in our collection. Made up of five distinct components, We Are What We Archive sheds light on electoral politics, North American solidarity with Africa, disability activism, queer identity, and information access.
Exhibition and event series, January 26 – May 14, 2017
Finally Got the News uncovers the hidden legacy of the radical left of the 1970s, a decade when vibrant social movements challenged racism, imperialism, patriarchy and capitalism itself. It uses original printed materials—from pamphlets to posters, flyers to record albums—to tell this politically rich and little-known story.

The Archives & Special Collections at the University of Connecticut will host the first traveling installment of the exhibition Our Comics, Ourselves co-curated by Jan Descartes and Monica McKelvey Johnson. The exhibition premiered at Interference Archive in January, and we’re really excited to see it move on to new locations. Our Comics, Ourselves features comics from the Interference Archive collection as well as private collections on loan.

Soñamos Sentirnos Libres : Under Construction is a collaborative exhibition, highlighting the work of Mobile Print Power.
This cumulative exhibition will highlight old and new collaborations between Mobile Print Power and seven organizations in the form of workshops and events. These workshops will develop throughout its run, creating ongoing collaborative processes.

The exhibition Our Comics, Ourselves: Identity, Expression, and Representation in Comic Art presents the graphic stories that describe the complexity and diversity of our collective experience, and examines the social and historical contexts within which they emerged. This exhibition includes includes comic books, graphic novels, DIY comics, and various comics paraphernalia primarily from the United States, 1945 to present.
The Our Comics, Ourselves exhibition is on Tumblr! Because of such a positive response to the Our Comics, Ourselves exhibition, we expanded its scope to include a curated Tumblr. Interference Archive presents Armed By Design: Posters and Publications of Cuba’s Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), a public exhibition and event series which features the graphic design production of OSPAAAL. Armed By Design will highlight the intersection of graphic design and political solidarity work in post-revolution Cuba through the lens of OSPAAAL’s output.

Music has been at the core of hundreds of political and social struggles across the globe. This exhibition features the picture sleeves of over 200 political recordings that will expose the broad scope of the intersection of music and politics. In addition, flyers, lyric sheets, buttons, publications, and other ephemera are on display. A series of programs will run throughout the run of exhibition, where we will actively and collectively listen to—and discuss—how music has shaped the manners in which we understand ourselves in the past, present, and into the future.

Interference Archive presents We Won’t Move: Tenants Organize in New York City, an exploration of collective action by NYC tenants for decent and affordable housing from the 1940s to the present.

Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp was a 19-year anti-nuclear protest and encampment at the U.S. Military Base at Greenham Common, Berkshire County, England. This exhibition and event series, organized as a mother/daughter collaboration between Susan Jahoda and Emma Jahoda-Brown, assembles accounts of the comings and goings and daily lives of a diverse group of women at Greenham primarily over a nine year period. Photographs, film, artifacts and sound are brought together to reveal a complex view of a largely invisible history.

Interference Archive presents Self-Determination Inside/Out, a comprehensive exhibition and public program series featuring the cultural materials produced by incarcerated people and their allies. Ranging from the Attica Rebellion to political prisoners, AIDS education to prisoners-as-laborers, the struggles of incarcerated women and queer people to the current wave of hunger strikes in prisons and detention centers across the country, these materials fundamentally recast the history of the prison-industrial complex.

Rather than focus on a specific movement or idea, We Are Who We Archive serves as a portrait of a growing archive and highlights the role of individuals in preserving collective history.

Interference Archive presents La Autonomía es la Vida, la Sumisión es la Muerte (Autonomy is Life, Submission is Death) a graphic art portfolio, produced by Convergencia Grafica MALLA and Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative. This exhibition honors the 520 years of struggle of the indigenous peoples of Mexico against genocide and for self-determination and autonomy through a celebration of the 20 years of the Zapatista movement’s resistance against the Mexican state and global capitalism.
