The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.
It is located
The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.
South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent, but it is sometimes called by different names in China's neighboring countries, often reflecting historical claims to hegemony over the sea.

SOUTH CHINA SEA — New satellite imagery shows China has been dumping weapons systems on all of its seven artificial islands in the contested South China Sea, despite saying it had no intention of militarizing the area. Last year during a visit to the U.S., President Xi Jinping publicly stated that Beijing did “not intend to pursue militarization” of the contested waters, the Guardian reported. Satellite imagery released last week by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies shows what appears to be anti-aircraft guns and close-in weapons systems on all seven of China’s man-made islands in the disputed waters, according to the Guardian. What the U.S. needs to do is lock things down with Japan and South Korea, and more ...

The South China Sea is one of the most hotly contested and lucrative regions in the world. In July, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled in a landmark case in favour of the Philippines, which rejected the Chinese claim to almost the entire South China Sea. China called the ruling ill-founded and non-binding. As the row in the maritime area continues to heat up, will this lead to war? Or are claims of a possible conflagration exaggerated? In this week's Arena, we debate the issue with Charles Liu, a senior fellow at the Peking University Centre on China and Global Affairs and the founder of Hao Capital, and Bonnie Glaser, a senior adviser for Asia and director of the China Power Project, at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
