A tour of Kilmainham Gaol, in Dublin, is a journey into Ireland’s past.
This imposing structure was built in 1796, and quickly established a reputation as one of Ireland’s most fearsome prisons due to its poor living conditions and the brutal treatment of its occupants. After its abandonment in 1924, it sat for many years before refurbishment and conversion to a museum in the 1980s. While it showcases a rather dark portion of Irish history, it’s nonetheless a major draw for those curious about the nation’s past, and Kilmainham Gaol sightseeing is always fascinating.
The gaol’s cells were not segregated; up to five men, women, and even children as young as seven could be held together in each small chamber. Wander through dim, narrow corridors lit only by a handful of lamps and try to imagine scores of other inhabitants moving beside you. The center atrium looks pristine now, but during the prison’s heyday, it would have been choked with prisoners being shuffled to their cells or off to the colonies. Each cell had one candle to provide illumination and warmth, and each candle had to last for two weeks—needless to say, much of the time these cells were cold, miserable places.
Don’t forget to explore the rest of Dublin once you finish up at Kilmainham Gaol. Directly across the street from the prison is the Irish Museum of Modern Art and its Garden of Galleries; this is a good spot to cleanse your eyes before checking out the rest of the city.

Famous prisoners included Parnell, De Valera and Countess Markeviecz. De Valera himself actually came back to the gaol to give a speech as President when he'd been here as a prisoner once upon a time. The gaol has featured in such films as Michael Collins, In the Name of the Father and the original Italian Job.
....were allowed to spend their last ten minutes together in this cell which is down there on the left. But as I mentioned, they were'nt alone.

February 23, 2009 was another gorgeous day and another great opportunity for more explorations of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Early, at 7:30 am, we took the hotel workers bus' into town again and spent an hour riding into Cuba's second largest town, all in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern Chinese built bus. An hour later we had arrived near the centre of the city and went for a short walk to the Parque Cespedes, Santiago's main square.
One of the main sights on this square is the Hotel Casa Granda, a stately hotel built in the early 1920s. I had read that there was a great rooftop terrace on this hotel so we walked inside to find the elevator. A local by the name of Carlos joined us right away and provided us with all sorts of unsolicited tourist information in broken English. He started to show us around without asking, one of Cuba's many "independent travel entrepreneurs" (also called "jinetero").
When we left the hotel, Carlos kept following us and feeding us information about various local attractions, and finally led us to a local "paladar", a privately owned licensed restaurant (one of the few private enterprises that Cuba allows), and we sat down to have a breakfast. The meal was tasty and affordable.
After a filling early morning meal we continued our walk and Carlos showed us one of the more popular sights in Santiago: the Escaleras de Padre Pico, a stairway of 52 steps that was built in 1899 under mayor Emilio Bacardi. These stairs are the entranceway to one of Santiago's typical neighbourhoods, El Tivoli.
From here we continued our westward walk down the hill to reach the port area of Santiago which features a public area called Parque Alameda. From here our guide took us to a local Cuban market at the intersection of Calle Trocha and Linea where we saw real Cuban food shopping in action. My knees buckled a bit when I saw slabs of unrefigerated meat and even whole heads of dead pigs on offer. But I was told that the animals get slaughtered in the early morning and by noon everything is bought up; so refrigeration is apparently not all that important.
The next step in our local explorations was a ride on a horse and buggy that took us past Santiago's old train station. Then we stopped off at the local rum factory, but our guide cautioned us not to buy from here because apparently all the money "goes to Fidel". He suggested to us to buy rum directly from some of the factory workers later. Apparently factory workers get 2 free bottles of rum a week and, and like most Cuban "entrepreneurs", they find away of turning that into cash.
Past mid-day our horse cart took us back to the main square of Santiago de Cuba where we were told we could catch the hotel workers bus back into our resort. We would just have to be there at around 12:30 or 1 pm. Well, we arrived at the indicated spot and waited for about an hour and a half, but no bus arrived. Finally, we figured that something must have gone wrong and decided to catch a taxi.
Licensed taxis in Cuba are usually fairly modern vehicles but they charge very high rates while unofficial taxis are much more affordable, but you might be riding in a 1940s vehicle that is held together with pantyhose and strings. We were approached by another local entrepreneur who offered us a ride back to the resort at a much cheaper price although the vehicle, a 1980 Lada, did not look all that encouraging. Various body panels had rusted through, there were no seatbelts, and I did not dare to look at the profile of the tires.
But our driver assured us that he kept the vehicle in good running shape, so we agreed and hopped into this spartanic vehicle. Sure enough our driver took us back safely to our resort and shared with us a number of insights into the Cuban lifestyle. We had had another great day of discoveries in the beautiful city of Santiago.
After another relaxing late afternoon by the pool we took in another show at the resort; this time it was a Broadway-styled show by our resort's gifted entertainment and dance crew. Another perfect day in Cuba...

Back to Basics and back to Nature. Glenmalure Youth Hostel in County Wicklow, “The Garden of Ireland”, is a simple mountain lodge in the style of an Irish traditional house but it’s for that very reason that it’s so popular. Set in a place of great beauty that is both iconic and tranquil, it was originally built as a Hunting Lodge in 1903. Glenmalure has no running water and no electricity so it’s perfect for nature lovers who want to get away from it all and have a unique experience. Don’t worry too much – there is a gas-powered cooker and gas-powered fridge and chemical toilet and there’s a stream nearby for water to boil and plenty of wood logs to keep the open fire going well into the night. This provides the perfect atmosphere for discussions and the opportunity to cultivate new friendships, have some banter or even a good old sing song.
Glenmalure is a U-shaped glacial valley in the Wicklow Mountains with only one road leading in or out. The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity in the area is really something special. The Lodge is also the subject of the ghostly play “The Last House in the Glen” by Marion McEvoy and it tells the story of the lodge with some spooky happenings! It is also referred in J.M Synge’s play In ”The Shadow of the Glen” whose opening line are ”The Last Cottage at the Head of the Long Glen in Wicklow…” referring to Glenmalure Youth Hostel. There is more information on this period and its history available at the Hostel.
It is steeped in history – it has seen war, destruction and famine. Prior to it being a hostel, in its early years, key historical figures spent time in this lodge including Irish Republican freedom fighters such as Countess Markievicz, Maud Gonne, her son Sean McBride, a founding member of Amnesty International and served as its International Chairman and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. It also hosted Eamon De Valera and Erskine Childers who later became President of Ireland as well as famous literary figures such as Ireland’s most famous poet, W.B. Yeats, who wrote poems inspired by Maud Gonne and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Those in the literary, political and arts circles also frequented the Lodge in those early years such as the artist Francis Stuart, the famous playwright Lennox Robinson, Margaret Pearse and Hanna Sheedy Skeffington to mention just a few. The late Garret Fitzgerald also frequented Glenmalure as well as being a life long member of An Óige.
The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity and the natural beauty of this immediate area is just stunning. Hiking around this particular area is simply fantastic .On one scale you will find yourself at the base of Lugnaquilla Mountain which is the highest Mountain in Leinster and the third highest one on the island. Mountaineers will say that it is arguably the most difficult one to tackle and a real challenge. On the other hand there is a network of great hikes and trails that even the most inexperienced hill walker can enjoy. There are maps and information available free at the hostel. However do be careful, this is Ireland and the weather conditions can vary, do seek advice before setting off! We can provide guides if pre-booked in advance for free.
The little hostel is very popular with groups who want to get away from it all for a night. The hostel can accommodate up to 16 people for to rent it out completely and is in great demand from all sorts of groups from stag parties to Scout groups and the like! While cosy and snug in the hostel, just watch that you don’t tell too many ghost stories in case you scare yourself too much. Enjoy a real Irish back-to-nature experience staying at Glenmalure Hostel.

Valera is a city in Trujillo State in Venezuela, situated between the rivers Momboy and Motatán. The current[update] mayor is Temístocles Cabezas, who has had that post since 2009. The city is home to Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Colombian and Spanish communities. It is also home to the Universidad Valle del Momboy, a private university and the Instituto Universitario de Tecnología de Trujillo (IUTET), a three year public technical institute.
The city is the commercial center of Trujillo state, and a gateway to the Andes region of Venezuela. It has a vibrant business community, as well as a diverse and educated workforce. As the economic and commercial center of Trujillo state, Valera has a vibrant business community. Valera is a leading commercial centre for the agricultural products in Venezuela, in which sugarcane, cacao, coffee, fruit, and grains are cultivated. Flour milling is a principal industry. The area has traditionally supplied about one-fourth of the nation’s wheat.
The city has three daily papers, the Diario de Los Andes, Todo Primicias and the Diario El Tiempo, [1] along with several radio stations, including Angel FM 93.7. Others include Radio Única. [2] Valera also publishes the Magazine Cars Trujillo, its first magazine about cars.

This imposing structure was built in 1796, and quickly established a reputation as one of Ireland’s most fearsome prisons due to its poor living conditions and the brutal treatment of its occupants. After its abandonment in 1924, it sat for many years before refurbishment and conversion to a museum in the 1980s. While it showcases a rather dark portion of Irish history, it’s nonetheless a major draw for those curious about the nation’s past, and Kilmainham Gaol sightseeing is always fascinating. The gaol’s cells were not segregated; up to five men, women, and even children as young as seven could be held together in each small chamber. Wander through dim, narrow corridors lit only by a handful of lamps and try to imagine scores of other inhabitants moving beside you. The center atrium looks pristine now, but during the prison’s heyday, it would have been choked with prisoners being shuffled to their cells or off to the colonies. Each cell had one candle to provide illumination and warmth, and each candle had to last for two weeks—needless to say, much of the time these cells were cold, miserable places. Don’t forget to explore the rest of Dublin once you finish up at Kilmainham Gaol. Directly across the street from the prison is the Irish Museum of Modern Art and its Garden of Galleries; this is a good spot to cleanse your eyes before checking out the rest of the city. De Valera himself actually came back to the gaol to give a speech as President when he'd been here as a prisoner once upon a time. The gaol has featured in such films as Michael Collins, In the Name of the Father and the original Italian Job. ....were allowed to spend their last ten minutes together in this cell which is down there on the left. February 23, 2009 was another gorgeous day and another great opportunity for more explorations of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Early, at 7:30 am, we took the hotel workers bus' into town again and spent an hour riding into Cuba's second largest town, all in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern Chinese built bus. An hour later we had arrived near the centre of the city and went for a short walk to the Parque Cespedes, Santiago's main square. One of the main sights on this square is the Hotel Casa Granda, a stately hotel built in the early 1920s. I had read that there was a great rooftop terrace on this hotel so we walked inside to find the elevator. A local by the name of Carlos joined us right away and provided us with all sorts of unsolicited tourist information in broken English. He started to show us around without asking, one of Cuba's many "independent travel entrepreneurs" (also called "jinetero"). When we left the hotel, Carlos kept following us and feeding us information about various local attractions, and finally led us to a local "paladar", a privately owned licensed restaurant (one of the few private enterprises that Cuba allows), and we sat down to have a breakfast. The meal was tasty and affordable. After a filling early morning meal we continued our walk and Carlos showed us one of the more popular sights in Santiago: the Escaleras de Padre Pico, a stairway of 52 steps that was built in 1899 under mayor Emilio Bacardi. These stairs are the entranceway to one of Santiago's typical neighbourhoods, El Tivoli. From here we continued our westward walk down the hill to reach the port area of Santiago which features a public area called Parque Alameda. From here our guide took us to a local Cuban market at the intersection of Calle Trocha and Linea where we saw real Cuban food shopping in action. My knees buckled a bit when I saw slabs of unrefigerated meat and even whole heads of dead pigs on offer. But I was told that the animals get slaughtered in the early morning and by noon everything is bought up; so refrigeration is apparently not all that important. The next step in our local explorations was a ride on a horse and buggy that took us past Santiago's old train station. Then we stopped off at the local rum factory, but our guide cautioned us not to buy from here because apparently all the money "goes to Fidel". He suggested to us to buy rum directly from some of the factory workers later. Apparently factory workers get 2 free bottles of rum a week and, and like most Cuban "entrepreneurs", they find away of turning that into cash. Past mid-day our horse cart took us back to the main square of Santiago de Cuba where we were told we could catch the hotel workers bus back into our resort. We would just have to be there at around 12:30 or 1 pm. Well, we arrived at the indicated spot and waited for about an hour and a half, but no bus arrived. Finally, we figured that something must have gone wrong and decided to catch a taxi. Licensed taxis in Cuba are usually fairly modern vehicles but they charge very high rates while unofficial taxis are much more affordable, but you might be riding in a 1940s vehicle that is held together with pantyhose and strings. We were approached by another local entrepreneur who offered us a ride back to the resort at a much cheaper price although the vehicle, a 1980 Lada, did not look all that encouraging. Various body panels had rusted through, there were no seatbelts, and I did not dare to look at the profile of the tires. But our driver assured us that he kept the vehicle in good running shape, so we agreed and hopped into this spartanic vehicle. Sure enough our driver took us back safely to our resort and shared with us a number of insights into the Cuban lifestyle. We had had another great day of discoveries in the beautiful city of Santiago. After another relaxing late afternoon by the pool we took in another show at the resort; this time it was a Broadway-styled show by our resort's gifted entertainment and dance crew. Back to Basics and back to Nature. Glenmalure Youth Hostel in County Wicklow, “The Garden of Ireland”, is a simple mountain lodge in the style of an Irish traditional house but it’s for that very reason that it’s so popular. Set in a place of great beauty that is both iconic and tranquil, it was originally built as a Hunting Lodge in 1903. Glenmalure has no running water and no electricity so it’s perfect for nature lovers who want to get away from it all and have a unique experience. Don’t worry too much – there is a gas-powered cooker and gas-powered fridge and chemical toilet and there’s a stream nearby for water to boil and plenty of wood logs to keep the open fire going well into the night. This provides the perfect atmosphere for discussions and the opportunity to cultivate new friendships, have some banter or even a good old sing song. Glenmalure is a U-shaped glacial valley in the Wicklow Mountains with only one road leading in or out. The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity in the area is really something special. The Lodge is also the subject of the ghostly play “The Last House in the Glen” by Marion McEvoy and it tells the story of the lodge with some spooky happenings! It is also referred in J.M Synge’s play In ”The Shadow of the Glen” whose opening line are ”The Last Cottage at the Head of the Long Glen in Wicklow…” referring to Glenmalure Youth Hostel. There is more information on this period and its history available at the Hostel. It is steeped in history – it has seen war, destruction and famine. Prior to it being a hostel, in its early years, key historical figures spent time in this lodge including Irish Republican freedom fighters such as Countess Markievicz, Maud Gonne, her son Sean McBride, a founding member of Amnesty International and served as its International Chairman and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. It also hosted Eamon De Valera and Erskine Childers who later became President of Ireland as well as famous literary figures such as Ireland’s most famous poet, W.B. Yeats, who wrote poems inspired by Maud Gonne and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Those in the literary, political and arts circles also frequented the Lodge in those early years such as the artist Francis Stuart, the famous playwright Lennox Robinson, Margaret Pearse and Hanna Sheedy Skeffington to mention just a few. The late Garret Fitzgerald also frequented Glenmalure as well as being a life long member of An Óige. The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity and the natural beauty of this immediate area is just stunning. Hiking around this particular area is simply fantastic .On one scale you will find yourself at the base of Lugnaquilla Mountain which is the highest Mountain in Leinster and the third highest one on the island. Mountaineers will say that it is arguably the most difficult one to tackle and a real challenge. On the other hand there is a network of great hikes and trails that even the most inexperienced hill walker can enjoy. There are maps and information available free at the hostel. However do be careful, this is Ireland and the weather conditions can vary, do seek advice before setting off! We can provide guides if pre-booked in advance for free. The little hostel is very popular with groups who want to get away from it all for a night. The hostel can accommodate up to 16 people for to rent it out completely and is in great demand from all sorts of groups from stag parties to Scout groups and the like! While cosy and snug in the hostel, just watch that you don’t tell too many ghost stories in case you scare yourself too much. Enjoy a real Irish back-to-nature experience staying at Glenmalure Hostel. Please note as this is a mountain lodge with basic facilities, it is NOT registered through Fáilte Ireland. This imposing structure was built in 1796, and quickly established a reputation as one of Ireland’s most fearsome prisons due to its poor living conditions and the brutal treatment of its occupants. After its abandonment in 1924, it sat for many years before refurbishment and conversion to a museum in the 1980s. While it showcases a rather dark portion of Irish history, it’s nonetheless a major draw for those curious about the nation’s past, and Kilmainham Gaol sightseeing is always fascinating.
The gaol’s cells were not segregated; up to five men, women, and even children as young as seven could be held together in each small chamber. Wander through dim, narrow corridors lit only by a handful of lamps and try to imagine scores of other inhabitants moving beside you. The center atrium looks pristine now, but during the prison’s heyday, it would have been choked with prisoners being shuffled to their cells or off to the colonies. Each cell had one candle to provide illumination and warmth, and each candle had to last for two weeks—needless to say, much of the time these cells were cold, miserable places.
Don’t forget to explore the rest of Dublin once you finish up at Kilmainham Gaol. Directly across the street from the prison is the Irish Museum of Modern Art and its Garden of Galleries; this is a good spot to cleanse your eyes before checking out the rest of the city.

It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.

The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.

A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

The gaol has featured in such films as Michael Collins, In the Name of the Father and the original Italian Job.

February 23, 2009 was another gorgeous day and another great opportunity for more explorations of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Early, at 7:30 am, we took the hotel workers bus' into town again and spent an hour riding into Cuba's second largest town, all in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern Chinese built bus. An hour later we had arrived near the centre of the city and went for a short walk to the Parque Cespedes, Santiago's main square.
One of the main sights on this square is the Hotel Casa Granda, a stately hotel built in the early 1920s. I had read that there was a great rooftop terrace on this hotel so we walked inside to find the elevator. A local by the name of Carlos joined us right away and provided us with all sorts of unsolicited tourist information in broken English. He started to show us around without asking, one of Cuba's many "independent travel entrepreneurs" (also called "jinetero").
When we left the hotel, Carlos kept following us and feeding us information about various local attractions, and finally led us to a local "paladar", a privately owned licensed restaurant (one of the few private enterprises that Cuba allows), and we sat down to have a breakfast. The meal was tasty and affordable.
After a filling early morning meal we continued our walk and Carlos showed us one of the more popular sights in Santiago: the Escaleras de Padre Pico, a stairway of 52 steps that was built in 1899 under mayor Emilio Bacardi. These stairs are the entranceway to one of Santiago's typical neighbourhoods, El Tivoli.
From here we continued our westward walk down the hill to reach the port area of Santiago which features a public area called Parque Alameda. From here our guide took us to a local Cuban market at the intersection of Calle Trocha and Linea where we saw real Cuban food shopping in action. My knees buckled a bit when I saw slabs of unrefigerated meat and even whole heads of dead pigs on offer. But I was told that the animals get slaughtered in the early morning and by noon everything is bought up; so refrigeration is apparently not all that important.
The next step in our local explorations was a ride on a horse and buggy that took us past Santiago's old train station. Then we stopped off at the local rum factory, but our guide cautioned us not to buy from here because apparently all the money "goes to Fidel". He suggested to us to buy rum directly from some of the factory workers later. Apparently factory workers get 2 free bottles of rum a week and, and like most Cuban "entrepreneurs", they find away of turning that into cash.
Past mid-day our horse cart took us back to the main square of Santiago de Cuba where we were told we could catch the hotel workers bus back into our resort. We would just have to be there at around 12:30 or 1 pm. Well, we arrived at the indicated spot and waited for about an hour and a half, but no bus arrived. Finally, we figured that something must have gone wrong and decided to catch a taxi.
Licensed taxis in Cuba are usually fairly modern vehicles but they charge very high rates while unofficial taxis are much more affordable, but you might be riding in a 1940s vehicle that is held together with pantyhose and strings. We were approached by another local entrepreneur who offered us a ride back to the resort at a much cheaper price although the vehicle, a 1980 Lada, did not look all that encouraging. Various body panels had rusted through, there were no seatbelts, and I did not dare to look at the profile of the tires.
But our driver assured us that he kept the vehicle in good running shape, so we agreed and hopped into this spartanic vehicle. Sure enough our driver took us back safely to our resort and shared with us a number of insights into the Cuban lifestyle. We had had another great day of discoveries in the beautiful city of Santiago.
After another relaxing late afternoon by the pool we took in another show at the resort; this time it was a Broadway-styled show by our resort's gifted entertainment and dance crew. Another perfect day in Cuba...

February 23, 2009 was another gorgeous day and another great opportunity for more explorations of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Early, at 7:30 am, we took the hotel workers bus' into town again and spent an hour riding into Cuba's second largest town, all in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern Chinese built bus. An hour later we had arrived near the centre of the city and went for a short walk to the Parque Cespedes, Santiago's main square.
One of the main sights on this square is the Hotel Casa Granda, a stately hotel built in the early 1920s. I had read that there was a great rooftop terrace on this hotel so we walked inside to find the elevator. A local by the name of Carlos joined us right away and provided us with all sorts of unsolicited tourist information in broken English. He started to show us around without asking, one of Cuba's many "independent travel entrepreneurs" (also called "jinetero").
When we left the hotel, Carlos kept following us and feeding us information about various local attractions, and finally led us to a local "paladar", a privately owned licensed restaurant (one of the few private enterprises that Cuba allows), and we sat down to have a breakfast. The meal was tasty and affordable.
After a filling early morning meal we continued our walk and Carlos showed us one of the more popular sights in Santiago: the Escaleras de Padre Pico, a stairway of 52 steps that was built in 1899 under mayor Emilio Bacardi. These stairs are the entranceway to one of Santiago's typical neighbourhoods, El Tivoli.
From here we continued our westward walk down the hill to reach the port area of Santiago which features a public area called Parque Alameda. From here our guide took us to a local Cuban market at the intersection of Calle Trocha and Linea where we saw real Cuban food shopping in action. My knees buckled a bit when I saw slabs of unrefigerated meat and even whole heads of dead pigs on offer. But I was told that the animals get slaughtered in the early morning and by noon everything is bought up; so refrigeration is apparently not all that important.
The next step in our local explorations was a ride on a horse and buggy that took us past Santiago's old train station. Then we stopped off at the local rum factory, but our guide cautioned us not to buy from here because apparently all the money "goes to Fidel". He suggested to us to buy rum directly from some of the factory workers later. Apparently factory workers get 2 free bottles of rum a week and, and like most Cuban "entrepreneurs", they find away of turning that into cash.
Past mid-day our horse cart took us back to the main square of Santiago de Cuba where we were told we could catch the hotel workers bus back into our resort. We would just have to be there at around 12:30 or 1 pm. Well, we arrived at the indicated spot and waited for about an hour and a half, but no bus arrived. Finally, we figured that something must have gone wrong and decided to catch a taxi.
Licensed taxis in Cuba are usually fairly modern vehicles but they charge very high rates while unofficial taxis are much more affordable, but you might be riding in a 1940s vehicle that is held together with pantyhose and strings. We were approached by another local entrepreneur who offered us a ride back to the resort at a much cheaper price although the vehicle, a 1980 Lada, did not look all that encouraging. Various body panels had rusted through, there were no seatbelts, and I did not dare to look at the profile of the tires.
But our driver assured us that he kept the vehicle in good running shape, so we agreed and hopped into this spartanic vehicle. Sure enough our driver took us back safely to our resort and shared with us a number of insights into the Cuban lifestyle. We had had another great day of discoveries in the beautiful city of Santiago.
After another relaxing late afternoon by the pool we took in another show at the resort; this time it was a Broadway-styled show by our resort's gifted entertainment and dance crew. Another perfect day in Cuba...

Back to Basics and back to Nature. Glenmalure Youth Hostel in County Wicklow, “The Garden of Ireland”, is a simple mountain lodge in the style of an Irish traditional house but it’s for that very reason that it’s so popular. Set in a place of great beauty that is both iconic and tranquil, it was originally built as a Hunting Lodge in 1903. Glenmalure has no running water and no electricity so it’s perfect for nature lovers who want to get away from it all and have a unique experience. Don’t worry too much – there is a gas-powered cooker and gas-powered fridge and chemical toilet and there’s a stream nearby for water to boil and plenty of wood logs to keep the open fire going well into the night. This provides the perfect atmosphere for discussions and the opportunity to cultivate new friendships, have some banter or even a good old sing song.
Glenmalure is a U-shaped glacial valley in the Wicklow Mountains with only one road leading in or out. The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity in the area is really something special. The Lodge is also the subject of the ghostly play “The Last House in the Glen” by Marion McEvoy and it tells the story of the lodge with some spooky happenings! It is also referred in J.M Synge’s play In ”The Shadow of the Glen” whose opening line are ”The Last Cottage at the Head of the Long Glen in Wicklow…” referring to Glenmalure Youth Hostel. There is more information on this period and its history available at the Hostel.
It is steeped in history – it has seen war, destruction and famine. Prior to it being a hostel, in its early years, key historical figures spent time in this lodge including Irish Republican freedom fighters such as Countess Markievicz, Maud Gonne, her son Sean McBride, a founding member of Amnesty International and served as its International Chairman and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. It also hosted Eamon De Valera and Erskine Childers who later became President of Ireland as well as famous literary figures such as Ireland’s most famous poet, W.B. Yeats, who wrote poems inspired by Maud Gonne and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Those in the literary, political and arts circles also frequented the Lodge in those early years such as the artist Francis Stuart, the famous playwright Lennox Robinson, Margaret Pearse and Hanna Sheedy Skeffington to mention just a few. The late Garret Fitzgerald also frequented Glenmalure as well as being a life long member of An Óige.
The Avonbeg River flows at the back of the hostel and the serenity and the natural beauty of this immediate area is just stunning. Hiking around this particular area is simply fantastic .On one scale you will find yourself at the base of Lugnaquilla Mountain which is the highest Mountain in Leinster and the third highest one on the island. Mountaineers will say that it is arguably the most difficult one to tackle and a real challenge. On the other hand there is a network of great hikes and trails that even the most inexperienced hill walker can enjoy. There are maps and information available free at the hostel. However do be careful, this is Ireland and the weather conditions can vary, do seek advice before setting off! We can provide guides if pre-booked in advance for free.
The little hostel is very popular with groups who want to get away from it all for a night. The hostel can accommodate up to 16 people for to rent it out completely and is in great demand from all sorts of groups from stag parties to Scout groups and the like! While cosy and snug in the hostel, just watch that you don’t tell too many ghost stories in case you scare yourself too much. Enjoy a real Irish back-to-nature experience staying at Glenmalure Hostel.
