Eyes are the organs of vision. They detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. In higher organisms, the eye is a complex optical system which collects light from the surrounding environment, regulates its intensity through a diaphragm, focuses it through an adjustable assembly of lenses to form an image, converts this image into a set of electrical signals, and transmits these signals to the brain through complex neural pathways that connect the eye via the optic nerve to the visual cortex and other areas of the brain. Eyes with resolving power have come in ten fundamentally different forms, and 96% of animal species possess a complex optical system. Image-resolving eyes are present in molluscs, chordates and arthropods.
The simplest "eyes", such as those in microorganisms, do nothing but detect whether the surroundings are light or dark, which is sufficient for the entrainment of circadian rhythms. From more complex eyes, retinal photosensitive ganglion cells send signals along the retinohypothalamic tract to the suprachiasmatic nuclei to effect circadian adjustment and to the pretectal area to control the pupillary light reflex.
Arachnids are a class (Arachnida) of joint-legged invertebrate animals (arthropods), in the subphylum Chelicerata. All arachnids have eight legs, although the front pair of legs in some species has converted to a sensory function, while in other species, different appendages can grow large enough to take on the appearance of extra pairs of legs. The term is derived from the Greek word ἀράχνη (aráchnē), meaning "spider".
Almost all extant arachnids are terrestrial. However, some inhabit freshwater environments and, with the exception of the pelagic zone, marine environments as well. They comprise over 100,000 named species, including spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, ticks, mites, and solifuges.
Almost all adult arachnids have eight legs, and arachnids may be easily distinguished from insects by this fact, since insects have six legs. However, arachnids also have two further pairs of appendages that have become adapted for feeding, defense, and sensory perception. The first pair, the chelicerae, serve in feeding and defense. The next pair of appendages, the pedipalps, have been adapted for feeding, locomotion, and/or reproductive functions. In Solifugae, the palps are quite leg-like, so that these animals appear to have ten legs. The larvae of mites and Ricinulei have only six legs; a fourth pair usually appears when they moult into nymphs. However, mites are variable: as well as eight, there are adult mites with six or even four legs.

A German scientist finds a massive harvestman with a 13 inch leg span, resembling a giant spider. Many people will agree that spiders are a little unnerving. Imagine the surprise when a scientist from a German institute discovered a spider with no eyes in a cave in Laos, followed a few months later by a giant, spider-like creature similar to a 'grand daddy long legs'. The unnamed creepy crawler has a leg span of approximately 13 inches. This newly discovered species is only slightly smaller than a record-holding species from South America with a 13.375-inch leg span. Known as harvestman, they are from one of the different orders of arachnids, and are 'distant cousins to true spiders'. Both spiders and arachnids have eight legs but their bodies differ greatly. Harvestman do not creat...
Here's a spider in our yard which is very large...maybe a 1" FAT body, and close to 2" in length including legs. I'm trying to identify it currently. They seem to disappear during the daytime, and come out at dusk to build their webs. There's a web site here which identifies spiders: http://www.termite.com/spider-identification.html
The jumping spider contains more than 500 described genera and about 5,000 described species, making it the largest family of spiders with about 13% of all species. Jumping spiders have some of the best vision among arthropods and use it in courtship, hunting, and navigation. Although they normally move unobtrusively and fairly slowly, most species are capable of very agile jumps, notably when hunting, but sometimes in response to sudden threats. All jumping spiders have four pairs of eyes with one pair being their particularly large anterior median eyes. Jumping spiders are generally diurnal, active hunters. Although jumping spiders are generally carnivorous, many species have been known to include nectar in their diets. Very few jumping spider fossils have been found. Of those known, ...

An eighth-grade student at Paul R. Smith Middle School in Holiday, Florida has been charged with felony computer intrusion after using an administrative-level password on a school computer to play a prank on a teacher. Domanik Green, 14, said he found out the password was a teacher's last name two years ago after watching a teacher type it into a computer. Green said students would use the password to screen-share friends. But when he found that the computer he was using did not have a camera, he decided to switch computers. He then logged onto the laptop of a teacher he found annoying and changed the teacher's desktop background into something inappropriate. Green also accessed a computer that contained encrypted files of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test but did not view or ac...
DALLAS — American Airlines is under fire after a veteran was reportedly kicked off a flight for being too fat. Chris Shelley boarded a flight in Dallas bound for Orange County on Friday when, he told CBS Los Angeles, a petite old lady sat down next to him, then moments later got up and walked to the front of the aircraft. Shelly said the woman went to the front of the plane to complain that he was to big for his seat. Shelley says the crew told him he was two inches over the seat and said he'd have to leave the flight. Shelley told CBS Los Angeles that he was made to feel like, "Not only a criminal, but a fat criminal." After begging the airline to ask the woman to switch seats with him as a compromise, Shelley was eventually allowed back on the flight. The average economy class seat o...
