VCE results: Meet Victoria’s stars who scored perfect ATARs

MEET the VCE stars — students who earned perfect ATARs in the class of 2016.

Independent schools led the bright sparks scoreboard — Haileybury and Penleigh and Essendon Grammar both boasted five students with the ultimate tertiary entrance rank.

One impressive year 10 student at Trinity Grammar posted perfect study scores of 50 in French and biology.

But inspirational tales of success emerged from all corners, including a Syrian refugee who excelled against the odds and a battler school breaking new ground. Scotch College students racked up four Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks of 99.95, including a pleasantly surprised Michel Nehme.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS LEAD VCE PERFECTION

“I hadn’t slept the entire night,” he said on Monday.

“My first reaction was a fist pump and a hug for the parents.”

Trinity Grammar in Kew celebrated two students with the ultimate rank, and 20 who achieved higher than 99, capping off its best VCE yet.

But one surprise was student Lachlan Collins, who scored five perfect 50 study scores but did not get an ATAR of 99.95.

Nearby, Methodist Ladies' College posted three maximum ATARs, while Balwyn High matched last year’s best-ever effort of two.

Other schools to produce a perfect performer were Mount Scopus Memorial College, Girton Grammar in Bendigo, Melbourne Grammar, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Camberwell Grammar, and Caulfield Grammar.

Selective-entry state school Nossal High, based in Berwick, recorded its highest ever ATAR result of 99.9 while Mac. Robertson Girls’ High also shone.

Haileybury school captain Cherie Han was among the high achievers to snare a place in the University of Melbourne’s scholarship program with her top ATAR.

“It’s an amazing result and the world is my oyster, so I look forward to seeing what I can achieve,” the aspiring medical student said.

Teachers at Maryborough Education Centre were all smiles after surpassing their own ATAR record. Principal David Sutton said the school had traditionally struggled to get high scores but this year was rejoicing in a 98.85.

“We haven’t had a recent history of scores of that nature,” he said.

“It demonstrates that it can be done with a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment.

“To come from a rural school and get such a score is an incredible achievement and we couldn’t be prouder.”
