Actress Amber Heard will return to the Gold Coast just 18 months after she and estranged husband Johnny Depp were found guilty of smuggling their terriers, Pistol and Boo, into Australia.

In a $22 million deal between DC Comics and the federal government, Heard, 30, will once again find herself in Australia, for the filming of blockbuster Aquaman.

Aquaman to film on Gold Coast

DC Comics will film Aquaman on the Gold Coast in 2017, featuring Amber Heard and Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa. Nine News

In May last year, Heard and Depp fled the country after Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce threatened to put the dogs down because they had entered Australia on the couple's private jet without going through quarantine.

The pair were forced to issue an awkward apology, video spruiking the importance of Australia's biosecurity and, in April this year, pleaded guilty to falsifying quarantine documents.

Heard has since filed for divorce from Depp, who was on the Gold Coast to shoot Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which is out next year.

But she will be forced to return to the scene of her crimes after the DC Comics franchise was lured to Queensland for her latest film project, Aquaman.

The project will commence shooting at the Village Roadshow Studios in the first half of next year.

Heard plays the wife of the film's titular comic hero who will be played by Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa.

It was announced this week that Patrick Wilson will play Aquaman's evil half-brother ORM.

The deal was announced on Thursday and will reportedly create 1200 jobs and pump $160 million into the Gold Coast economy.

A release from the office of Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she personally negotiated with Warner Bros executives.

Warner Bros will reportedly spend $100 million on physical production, creating 600 jobs.

"This is another huge win for our local industry and testament to the international reputation of our people," she said.
