Japanese tourist dies on the Great Barrier Reef

Another tourist has died on the Great Barrier Reef, the fourth to die while snorkelling or diving on the reef in the past month.

A police spokeswoman said a Japanese woman, 75, was pulled from the water about 2pm on Tuesday near Moore Reef, about 45 kilometres off Cairns.

The woman had been snorkelling with a tour group.

The police spokeswoman said CPR was performed once the woman was retrieved from the water, but it was to no avail.

"Police will now prepare a report for the coroner," she said.

"Workplace Health and Safety has also been notified."

It came after three people died in two separate incidents on the reef last month.

Two French tourists - Danielle Franck, 74, and Jacques Goron, 76 - died of apparent heart attacks while snorkeling near Michaelmas Cay on November 16, in a bizarre occurrence that saw another tourist also suffer from a medical condition.

Two days later, Englishman David Lowe, 60, died while diving at Agincourt Reef.

Mr Lowe, a father-of-three from Sheffield, had been on his second dive of the day.
