AURANGABAD: Though there is stiff opposition, political observers here are confident that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance will win the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in the elections scheduled on Wednesday.
The ruling alliance has claimed the support of more than 60 corportaors in the 115 member civic body. BJPs district unit president KishanchanTanwani said that all the Sena corporators, along with some independents, will support the BJP candidate Bhagwan (Bapu) Devidas Ghadamode.
"Our corporators are supporting the Sena candidate for the post of deputy mayor, while they will ensure the victory of Ghadamode. We are in majority and so we will win both the seats," he said.
With the BJP-Sena ruling alliance enjoying majority in the civic body, political observers also said that Ghadamode and Smita Ghogre of Shiv Sena, who is contesting for the post of deputy mayor, would comfortably win the seats.
On the other hand, opposition parties MIM, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and others have joined hands in an attempt to keep BJP-Sena away from power. "Fifty-three corporators are already with us and we are trying to convince six others which will help us grab both the seats," said Naser Siddique, MIM group leader in the civic body.
Opposition leader in the AMC Jahangir Khan said that the independents, who will play a crucial role in the elections, are with the opposition. "We have offered support to Congress corporator Ayyub Khan for the post of mayor and will make sure that MIM corporator Khan Irshad Ibrahim wins the post of deputy mayor," he said.
Apart from Ghadamode and Ayyub Khan, MIM's Sayra Bano Ajmal Khan has also filed nominations for the post of mayor. For the post of deputy mayor, in addition to Smita Ghogre, Congress' Abdul M Navid Abdul Rasheed and MIM's Khan Irshad Ibrahim are in fray.
The 115-member civic body has 29 Shiv Sena corporators, followed by BJP (23); AIMIM (24), Congress (11), BSP (5), NCP (4), RPI(D) (2), and 17 independents and others. But recently the municipal administration has disqualified one Shiv Sena corporator, thereby reducing the total number of members to 114.
The elections to the AMC general body and to the posts of mayor and deputy mayor were held in April last year. As per the pre-poll arrangement, the Shiv Sena got the mayor's post and the BJP got the deputy mayor's post for one-and-a-half years. For the remaining one-year term, the BJP would get the mayor's job, while Sena would get the deputy mayor's position.
Trimbak Tupe and his Promod Rathod have vacated the posts of mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, on November 30 to pave the way for other candidates.
