Three Redditors, /user/deltaburnt, /user/novasylum and /user/clearandsweet, break down the third Puella Magi Madoka Magica film with impressions, analysis, speculation and criticism. Show notes: Emotional reactions. Cake song. Transformation sequence. -What purpose do these scenes serve? -A purpose for everything on screen. Ask me why anything is in the original series. I know. Here? No idea. -Surely there could have been a better way to show them cooperate. Homura's journey: Utena -Escaping -Architecture -Randomness/Weirdness (showing things on screen that don't make sense) -The egg that will not hatch. Break the egg's shell! Princess Tutu -Escaping -Ballet (music, dancing) -Swans and Ravens -Black feathers and Homura's demonic outfit Fight scene -Why? Couldn't they just talk? Shot to the head. -tone swing -to the leg thereafter -ribbons Kyuubey's monologue -Ugghhh take more forevers -talk talk talk -homurawitch Music -Reused pieces -Original pieces (Homura's witch theme, others) Plot holes -Wasn't Homura going to be with Madoka? Sayaka sure was. -How were the incubators able to seal out a goddess? -Why was Homura able to turn into a witch? What was preventing her before then? (Her corruption rate is increasing beyond what we can cleanse!) -How did people enter the soul gem? Why did they have their memories erased? Why did Madoka? -How did Homura steal part of the Cycle? She had no wish to use. -What happened after Homura remade the world? Did she remake the world or just cause it to reset? -How did she get more power than Madoka? -Ending: Homura fell off a cliff, danced and Kyuubey was ruffled. -series only asks for one small conceit (girls' emotions can overcome entropy). This asks for many many many. Themes -Embrace reality vs. Live in blissful paradise. -thought Madoka was the one putting them in the false city -The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya -The Matrix -Even a theme? -Structure and order vs. passion or w/e Homura asks Madoka. -Could those themes have been done better? -Using lots from episode 1 and 10 -Complexity vs. Depth. -Conveyance -Anything that we missed after one viewing WAS NOT CONVEYED WELL. -Evangelion -Incoherence -Tutu vs Utena Problems: -I could not take emotions expressed seriously because of the confusion. -Mami's "The happiest I've ever been" fell flat. I dunno if it's really Mami, or Homura's version of Mami, Actual Mami with her memories rewritten who feels that way. -I did not understand. Things. -It ended in a cliffhanger after a superfluous first 45 minutes. -It do not know what the movie set out to do, and in the end it felt like a jumbled mess. -Hunger Games. Awesome: -Kyouko/Sayaka -I had one regret: I didn't get to see you again. Were we being trolled? -Large amount of irrelevant content. -Mami Fanservice. -Role in original series as mother -No happy ending. -Introduction of fan favorite Charlotte, even when she's superfluous. And, more than anything else: -Are you enjoying the movie? -Can never show this movie to others. Probably won't buy.
