Exclusive Ferrari J50 spider revealed

Christmas has come early for a handful of collectors with an eye for Italian supercars. 

Ferrari has unveiled a special-edition roadster limited to 10 examples likely to be snapped up by its most loyal supporters.

Dubbed J50, the model celebrates the brand's 50th anniversary, and it is only available in Japan. 

Finished in a special triple-layer coat of Ferrari's classic red paint, the model brings special styling touches that pay tribute to classic models while acknowledging the brand's current range. 

The 488 Spider-based machine has a touch of the track-only FXXK to its front end, as well as quad tail lamps that look similar to those found on the new GTC4 Lusso.

Powered by a modified version of the 488's 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8, the J50 produces 507kW of power - 15kW more than the regular car.

Ferrari says its wrap-around windscreen design is inspired by the visors of racing helmets, and that the car calls to mind a handful of the brand's classic designs including the F50 supercar sold in the 1990s.

Engineers replaced the 488 Spider's folding hard-top roof with carbon fibre targa panels that can be stowed behind its custom-made seats.

The brand has not released a price for the model, which is likely to be worth well over $1 million to Ferrari's famously loyal customers.
