Michael Gudinski AM has been one of Australian music’s most influential provocateurs for over five decades. Through his record label Mushroom Records, booking agencies Premier Artists and Harbour, and concert arm Frontier Touring Company, Gudinski has been involved in recording and publishing, concert promotion, venues and merchandising. He has helped shape the careers of generations of Australian artists, including Skyhooks, Split Enz, Models, Paul Kelly, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Barnes, Yothu Yindi, Vance Joy and Dan Sultan. In 1998, he received the prestigious APRA Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music and in 2006 was made a Member of the Order of Australia. He regularly appears in the top 5 of the Australian Music Industry Directory (AMID) Power 50.
In this interview with Bruce Butler, Michael Gudinski discusses the local Melbourne dance scene where he started his career, his experiences at the Sunbury Music Festival, the foundation of Mushroom Records, and his time working with artists like Kylie Minogue, Hunters & Collectors and The Temper Trap.

Australian Music Industry Icon Michael Gudinski Has Died Suddenly, Aged 68.
Gudinski died on Monday night, according to a statement from his record company, Mushroom.
The promoter and company boss was a towering figure in Australian music. He was just 20 when he launched Mushroom Records in 1972.
Gudinski worked with some of Australia’s biggest names, including Jimmy Barnes, who sent out an emotional tweet on Tuesday.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Gudinski AM overnight,” Mushroom Group said in a statement.
“The much-loved Australian music legend died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne, Australia.”
Gudinski was born in Melbourne in 1952, to Russian immigrant parents. He got his first taste of the entrepreneurial life aged just seven, when he charged Caulfield Cup racegoers to park in a vacant block next to his house.
It was quickly followed by his first international tour as promoterin teh same year: John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.
“It was the most money I’d ever made in one night in my life,” he later told a biographer.
He set up Mushroom Records later that same year.
Tributes were flowing for Gudinski as reports of his death emerged on Tuesday.
Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe described the promoter as a towering figure and said the news he had died “seems almost impossible”.
“I’m not sure we ever agreed on anything, except maybe Ed Sheeran,” he said.

Michael Gudinski
Michael Solomon Gudinski, AM (born 22 August 1952) is an Australian entrepreneur and businessman currently based in Melbourne who is a leading figure in the Australian music industry. Gudinski is mostly known for forming the highly successful Australian record company Mushroom Records in 1972 through whom he signed several generations of Australian musicians and performers ranging from MacKenzie Theory, the Skyhooks, The Choirboys, Kylie Minogue, and New Zealand's Split Enz to newer artists such as Eskimo Joe, Evermore and others forging a string of successful releases by local talent. He is the father of singer Kate Alexa, who has been signed to his record label Liberation Music since mid-2004.
Biography
Gudinski was born to Jewish Russian immigrants who had arrived in Australia in 1948.
He was educated at Melbourne High School and Mount Scopus, and was a school friend of several young musicians who later became prominent on the Australian music scene.
Gudinski began promoting rock dances around Melbourne while still in his teens and moved into music agency work in the late 1960s. This led to the establishment of the Consolidated Rock artist agency in around 1970.

Australian Music Industry Icon Michael Gudinski Has Died Suddenly, Aged 68.
Gudinski died on Monday night, according to a statement from his record company, Mushroom.
The promoter and company boss was a towering figure in Australian music. He was just 20 when he launched Mushroom Records in 1972.
Gudinski worked with some of Australia’s biggest names, including Jimmy Barnes, who sent out an emotional tweet on Tuesday.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Gudinski AM overnight,” Mushroom Group said in a statement.
“The much-loved Australian music legend died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne, Australia.”
Gudinski was born in Melbourne in 1952, to Russian immigrant parents. He got his first taste of the entrepreneurial life aged just seven, when he charged Caulfield Cup racegoers to park in a vacant block next to his house.
It was quickly followed by his first international tour as promoterin teh same year: John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.
“It was the most money I’d ever made in one night in my life,” he later told a biographer.
He set up Mushroom Records later that same year.
Tributes were flowing for Gudinski as reports of his death emerged on Tuesday.
Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe described the promoter as a towering figure and said the news he had died “seems almost impossible”.
“I’m not sure we ever agreed on anything, except maybe Ed Sheeran,” he said.

Michael Gudinski AM has been one of Australian music’s most influential provocateurs for over five decades. Through his record label Mushroom Records, booking agencies Premier Artists and Harbour, and concert arm Frontier Touring Company, Gudinski has been involved in recording and publishing, concert promotion, venues and merchandising. He has helped shape the careers of generations of Australian artists, including Skyhooks, Split Enz, Models, Paul Kelly, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Barnes, Yothu Yindi, Vance Joy and Dan Sultan. In 1998, he received the prestigious APRA Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music and in 2006 was made a Member of the Order of Australia. He regularly appears in the top 5 of the Australian Music Industry Directory (AMID) Power 50.
In this interview with Bruce Butler, Michael Gudinski discusses the local Melbourne dance scene where he started his career, his experiences at the Sunbury Music Festival, the foundation of Mushroom Records, and his time working with artists like Kylie Minogue, Hunters & Collectors and The Temper Trap.

Michael Gudinski
Michael Solomon Gudinski, AM (born 22 August 1952) is an Australian entrepreneur and businessman currently based in Melbourne who is a leading figure in the Australian music industry. Gudinski is mostly known for forming the highly successful Australian record company Mushroom Records in 1972 through whom he signed several generations of Australian musicians and performers ranging from MacKenzie Theory, the Skyhooks, The Choirboys, Kylie Minogue, and New Zealand's Split Enz to newer artists such as Eskimo Joe, Evermore and others forging a string of successful releases by local talent. He is the father of singer Kate Alexa, who has been signed to his record label Liberation Music since mid-2004.
Biography
Gudinski was born to Jewish Russian immigrants who had arrived in Australia in 1948.
He was educated at Melbourne High School and Mount Scopus, and was a school friend of several young musicians who later became prominent on the Australian music scene.
Gudinski began promoting rock dances around Melbourne while still in his teens and moved into music agency work in the late 1960s. This led to the establishment of the Consolidated Rock artist agency in around 1970.
