English from the 17th century, from a Medieval Latin or New Latin lexicon, from Ancient Greek λεξικόν ‎(lexikón, a lexicon), neuter of λεξικός ‎(lexikós, of words), from λέξις ‎(léxis, a saying, speech, word), from λέγειν ‎(légein, to speak).
