Police are hunting for a man who smashed a till over a cashier's head on Monday during a violent hold-up at a southern suburbs deli.

The incident occurred around 3pm at The Lunch Club in Carlisle - the same deli where police fatally shot a man who was threatening a deli worker with a knife in 2014.

The man involved in Monday's robbery is described as dark skinned and wasn't wearing a shirt.

He was last seen running east down Harris Street.

The 39-year-old cashier has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries to her head.

Another worker inside the store at the time was not injured and is assisting police.
