Facebook has analysed Australians' posts for 2016 to create a snapshot of the year – which this time doubles as a catalogue of this year's biggest news stories.
Mia Garlick, Facebook's head of policy in Australia and New Zealand, said the social media giant gathered the data in a way that kept posters' identities anonymous and counted how many times a topic was mentioned in posts.

With more than 11,000 athletes from 205 countries competing in 42 different sports, and nearly three weeks of action, here was a lot to talk about. And while the athletes fought for gold, Australians cheered and debated their performances to make the Games the 10th-most talked about event of the year on Facebook. You can view some of the highlights here.
9. Rodrigo Duterte
Rodrigo Duterte was the ninth most talked about topic by Australians on Facebook, with 25 million people generating 315 million interactions. The Philippines was also the most engaged election on Facebook in the Asia-Pacific region. The president's war against drugs, likening himself to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and telling human rights groups to "go to hell", fuelled online discussions.
8. Brexit
2016 was the year of big politics, with many people taking to Facebook to debate and discuss the referendum on whether Britain should leave the European Union, as well as the aftermath of the vote.

We all love sport, and sports always features in the top-10 lists for Australians' most talked about topics. And this year the Western Bulldogs resulted in 6.5 million football lovers tuning in across Australia. After 62 years, the epic victory for the Bulldogs had people posting, liking and sharing the intense win.
6. Pauline Hanson
This year marked the resurgence of Pauline Hanson's One Nation, and after 20 years of controversy the party quadrupled its primary vote, with support in Queensland reaching 10 per cent.
5. Pokemon Go
Pikachu also made a resurgence this year, invading smartphones and making people do funny things – like block traffic. When Pokemon Go was released mid-way through the year, the augmented reality game smashed all kinds of record books and crowds gathered and swarmed to collect rare pokemons, until police were called and several Pokestops had to be removed.

David Bowie's passing generated intense tributes and memories being shared of the music legend on Facebook, with people remembering their favourite songs, concerts and his final farewell music video. On Facebook, more than 35 million people globally generated 100 million likes, shares and comments within 12 hours of his death. And Australia was the second most engaged country on Facebook after the UK.
3. Shark Attacks
There were two fatal shark attacks this year, according to Taronga's 2016 Australian Shark Attack File Annual Report Summary, and several debates about shark nets and their unintended impacts. There was the Baird government's decision to drop its opposition to shark nets for the state's northern beaches, and Western Australia closed many it's beaches in the middle on the year. The debate raging on in NSW, as well as in parliamentary chambers, coffee shops and pubs about solutions in reducing the number of victims, got Australians posting, liking, commenting and sharing. This is the first time the topic is in the top 10.
2. Malcolm Turnbull
For the second consecutive year, Malcolm Turnbull came second in Facebook's year in review data. Last year, the only other politician to join him in the top 10 was Tony Abbott, who scored first place. During his 10-week election campaign, Mr Turnbull was consistently the most talked about politician on Facebook, while Pauline Hanson rose to become the third most talked about politician during the election, only just trailing behind Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten. During the election campaign, 3.7 million Australians had 32 million election-related posts, likes, comments and shares.

Topping the list was the US election. With a stunning late surge, Republican Donald Trump amassed enough votes to push him through the door of the White House.
