Gangs on rampage
Middle Eastern mobs descended on Cronulla and Brighton-le-Sands to launch revenge attacks following the vicious attacks by Cronulla locals on Sunday. Shots were fired in the air, women attacked and shops smashed as a second night of racial violence erupted in Sydney, while up to 600 young men – armed with guns and crowbars – prepared for battle. Twenty carloads of men had arrived at Cronulla by 10.30pm.
Accidental hero
A plane spotter at Glasgow Airport spotted a plane he had not seen before and took down its serial number. He saw the Gulfstream V being ushered to a stand that could not be seen from the airport terminal or the club. Eighteen months later the plane was identified as having been used by the CIA to take terrorist suspects to secret prisons around the world where they may be interrogated by methods illegal in the US.
Flying fish floors skipper
Ichi Ban skipper Matt Allen was struck down by an airborne fish as he stood at the helm of his boat during the first of nine races in the Rolex Trophy One Design series. Next to him lay a three-kilogram, 40-centimetre "bloodied guest." "I was steering and all of a sudden I was laid flat in the cockpit," he said, sporting a black right eye. "If I wasn't wearing any glasses it probably would have taken my eye out."
