Melbourne weather: A hot and windy Tuesday but a cool change is coming

Melburnians are set to swelter through a hot summer's day as a hot air mass sweeps across the state lifting the mercury to 34 degrees - but it is expected to cool down by Wednesday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rod Dickson said it would be a warm, windy day with a strong chance of showers on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Get set for a 34 degree Celsius day, before light showers welcomes a 15 degree drop in temperature, with the cool change lasting until next week.

"There is a fresh and gusty northerly wind developing this morning, and that should push the temperature up to 34 degrees," he said.

"There is a bit more cloud around than yesterday, so there will be some sunshine around this morning through the high cloud but I think we will see the clouds thicken up during the afternoon."

He said the city could experience wind gusts up to 70km/h.

Overnight on Monday, temperatures in the city hovered around a balmy 20 degrees with a minimum of 18.5 degrees. Mr Dickson said while the beginning of Tuesday night would bring warm temperatures, also in the 20s, he added that eventually it would hover at around 16 degrees on Wednesday morning.

"The cool change probably won't get here until 11pm and 12 midnight tonight," he said.

Meanwhile, the Mallee, Wimmera and northern country have a total fire ban in force.

The Melbourne Pollen Count predicts a high pollen count before dropping to more moderate levels on Wednesday.
