Mini trend: how to wear a corset belt

At this time of year, thoughts of an endless stream of end-of-year parties, Christmas goodies and several family meals (thanks, divorced parents) are enough to elicit a pre-emptive loosening of the belt buckle.

Not so fast. This summer, and indeed into 2017, there's one belt style that is shouting from the rooftops louder than any other: the corset, or waisted belt.

While the waist tamer first appeared in the 16th century, the good news is the modern take doesn't require you to cinch your mid-section until you can't breathe.

Some are calling the corset trend next winter's answer to the cold-shoulder.

Talita Estelle of online fashion label Esther said the defined waistline is definitely back.

"It will be a fun fad rather than lasting a few centuries. In this day and age, there are many other beautiful alternatives to accent the waistline such as glitzy belts and gorgeous fit-and-flare silhouettes," she said.

Who's doing it ... and how to work it

For his 2017 resort collection, tailoring master Dion Lee has re-imagined the corset in a more athletic fabrication, using his own "laced coil" technique.

"Corsetry is sensual, sculptural and highlights the contours of the female form," he says.

The beauty of a belt trend is you can whack it on with existing pieces and, presto, you have a whole new look.

Dion Lee's latest collection experiments corsetry with an athleisure twist.

Rebecca Tay, of The Outnet, says the modern corset is best worn over a more unexpected piece, such as a white shirt, or even a coat.

"This trend most definitely isn't about wearing a corset on its own ... don't be afraid to try one over anything you already have in your wardrobe."

So before you go all Dita Von Teese, not that there's anything wrong with that, have a good old dress-up session, just like you did when you were a child.

Where to get the look

Finding the right corset belt is a matter of style and budget. If you agree with Estelle and think it will be a short-lived trend, then don't spend too much. Maybe even try secondhand or retro stores. Some of the cutest styles of corset belt are embellished, or you can go for a wide elastic style, which will also help keep tame the credit card bill.
