Thomson 'flabbergasted' on selection

"Bankstown's fast bowler Jeff Thomson was a bolt from the blue last night for Australia's second Test team to meet Pakistan in Melbourne on 29 December. The rugged 22-year old speedster has appeared in only five first class matches and is in his initial season of big cricket for NSW. 'You must be joking. You must mean 'Froggy' Thomson,' the flabbergasted Thomson said when the Herald broke the news to him."

Car plants for Australia

"The two lead Japanese car makers announced yesterday that they would spend more than $60 million to begin manufacture in Australia," the Herald reported. "The Toyota Motor Company said in Tokyo that it planned to set up an engine plant in Australia at a cost of $27 million. Nissan Motors said in Melbourne that it would spend $35 million to begin manufacture in Australia of its latest model, the 180B."

Anchor parts recovered

"A government diving expedition has recovered bolts and parts of an anchor thrown overboard by Captain Cook when he was stuck on the Barrier Reef 200 years ago. The team returned to Cairns on Sunday night after a 10-day search which revealed three of the bands from the headstock of a one-ton anchor Cook left on the reef. The main part of the anchor was found by another expedition last year."
