22 of the best and worst dressed men of 2016

Classic, contemporary, eclectic or outlandish – a notable style moment has the ability to either haunt or call the shots for fashion seasons ahead.

As 2016 draws to a close, it's time to fete and contemplate the fashion tour de force that gave us the most memorable and influential style moments of the year.

Trends

With themes as diverse as athleisure and 90s grunge, there was something for everyone. Chinoiserie, sportswear couture and vintage-styling ruled runways from Topshop to Louis Vuitton. With them came luxe fabrications like velvet and silk, as well as embellishments in the form of crystals, exquisite embroidery and strong floral motifs, that popped up on everything, from oversized backpacks to bomber jackets.

Colour

Jewel colours ruled 2016 – orange, pink and red were the new black. So was green in all its guises, from olive and frog to peacock and khaki.  Beautiful rustic tones added calm to the Technicolour, with grey and earthy shades of spruce, copper and tan featuring strongly.

Prints

Graphic prints and heritage patterns dominated. Who knew Hawaiian-style could be so chic? Gucci and Dries Van Noten kept theirs appropriately vintage, whilst at Saint Laurent Hedi Slimane cleverly clashed his with leopard print. Marni and Dolce & Gabbana gave good pattern-on-pattern, and the grunge revival provided a plethora of super cool '90s mixed-and-matched plaid in all its forms.

Pieces

Overstated and extravagant were the new proportions to remember. Suiting was streamlined, and the embellished bomber jacket and oversized anorak were the toppers of choice, and looked best teamed with white jeans, shredded denim, drop-crotched strides, ankle-baring pants and knee-skimming shorts. The mechanic-style jumpsuit made a comeback at Givenchy and Alexander Wang, and vintage-styling saw Grandpa-approved classics like cardigans, stove-pipe pants and natty slip-on-loafers make a return.

Memorable style leaders

2016 gave us runway moments that were joyous, genius and inspired – groundbreaking enough to see them jump straight off the runway, and onto the red carpet.
