We've had over 30 inches of rain fall in 3 days in some parts of Louisiana & over 7000 rescues as A state of Emergency has been declared in 2 states: Louisiana & Mississippi - And this storm is only half the way to being done. It's going to move west, then north, then east.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said on Sunday that more than 7,000 people had been rescued by all participating agencies and volunteers since the flooding outbreak began.
"This is a serious event," Edwards said. "It is ongoing. It is not over."
The Associated Press reported Sunday that as many as 5,000 people were in shelters as a result of the widespread flooding.
The downpours have sent at least six river gauges to record levels in Louisiana. This includes the Amite River, which exceeded its previous record by over six feet in Magnolia, and by over four feet in Denham Springs.
Here's the latest on this flooding event.
Rescue Efforts In Full Force
Mike Steele, communications director for the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, told weather.com on Sunday that there was a huge spike in flood rescues overnight, mostly in the eastern half of Baton Rouge into Denham Springs.
"It’s kind of an all hands on deck," he said in a phone interview. "We still have a situation where motorists are stranded on I-12, and it remains closed between here and St. Tammany Parish, so the whole interstate system from Baton Rouge to that location is still closed."
Steele said the Louisiana State Police are n the process of airlifting supplies to those stranded along the interstate.
State police posted on Facebook that hundreds of cars were stranded on "islands" along the interstate in eastern Livingston Parish. Steele said some flooded spots were too deep for high water vehicles to traverse, while other spots littered with cars made it dangerous to attempt a helicopter landing.
Steele said more than 1,000 have been flooded in Baton Rouge, and that number that is expected to climb. In Livingston, more than 1,000 homes have been flooding, along with 200 in St. Helena Parish, and 500 or more in Tangipahoa Parish. Apart from residential damage, Steele said they are also monitoring nursing homes and hospitals in the area that could be impacted by rising water.
Steele said the Louisiana Air National Guard (LANG) has about 200 full-time employees working, plus about 750 guardsmen that have been deployed, a number that could climb to 1,000 soon. Additionally, he said 160 high water vehicles were in use as of last night, along with 35 watercraft, which brought the LANG rescue total to more than 3,500 people and 166 pets as of Sunday morning.
As more rain fell and floodwaters rose last night in the Baton Rouge area, Steele said buses were used to move people out of their communities. Steele then said as the water rapidly swelled, rescue efforts had to speed up with it.
"The water came up really fast overnight and we have more rain coming in now," he said. "It got so bad, I could hear concern on the scanners saying we needed to move the buses out of there fast."
Rescue efforts will persist into Sunday, but Steele pointed out that motorists need to be aware of the current conditions and avoid site-seeing amid storm damage to avoid putting a further strain on state resources.
Flooding triggered by the heavy rainfall
On Friday, 68-year-old William Mayfield drowned trying to escape floodwaters near Zachary, Louisiana, as heavy rains piled up water in the northeastern regions of the state, NBC News reported.
"We were in the trailer just watching TV and then the water just started coming up," Vernon Drummond, Mayfield's roommate, told the station. "We were walking out and he slipped and fell. He went under the water. We tried to save him, but we couldn't."
Rescue crews in Zachary recovered Mayfield's body Friday morning, according to WAFB. Drummond says Mayfield is originally from Los Angeles and does not have any family in the area.
Four counties in Mississippi have been placed under a state of emergency, according to a release from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
"I want to make sure all Mississippians that were forced out of their homes by this flooding are taken care of," said Bryant in the release. "This state of emergency will ensure state resources are available to all local governments that need help."

According to Wilkinson County Chancery Clerk Thomas Tolliver Jr., residents left their homes Friday as the town was inundated by floodwaters. Some people were able to leave on their own, but others had to be rescued. Most were sent to shelters in Natchez.
Tolliver said most of the buildings in Crosby sustained water damage.

All along the I-10 and I-12 corridor have been hit with devastating flooding. Aerial shots from Central - Walker - East Baton Rouge - Denham Springs, Albany - Zachary - etc. Massive flooding up to the roof of homes at times. Vehicles stood no chance. Record breaking flooding will continue for the next several days along the major river basins. Low lying areas are not expected to recover for a week or more. Damage is catastrophic.

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — Two disturbing videos emerged this week showing the horrific death of a Louisiana man who was fatally shot at close range by police.
According to a statement published on the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Facebook page, a person called police just after midnight on Tuesday to report that a black man had threatened him with a gun. The man was described as wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a Triple S Food Mart. Two uniformed officers responded to the call and confronted the suspect, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, at the convenience store.
In a video taken from a nearby parked car, Sterling is seen being violently tackled and thrown to the pavement by an officer.
Another video, shot by the owner of the store, Abdullah Muflahi, shows Sterling pinned to the ground. One officer is straddling him, holding what appears to be a gun to his chest while warning him not to move. The other officer, who kneeling by Sterling’s head, pulls his gun out of its holster when Sterling continues to struggle.
One of the officers suddenly yells “Gun!”, and shots ring out as Sterling is hit repeatedly in the chest. He later died from his injuries.
An unnamed witness told Baton Rouge newspaper the Advocate that Sterling had a gun but was neither holding it nor touching his pockets during the altercation. Shop owner Muflahi told the Advocate that officers retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the incident.
The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting after protests in the community erupted immediately after the shooting. The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after shooting incidents.

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — Two disturbing videos emerged this week showing the horrific death of a Louisiana man who was fatally shot at close range by police. According to a statement published on the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Facebook page, a person called police just after midnight on Tuesday to report that a black man had threatened him with a gun. The man was described as wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a Triple S Food Mart. Two uniformed officers responded to the call and confronted the suspect, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, at the convenience store. In a video taken from a nearby parked car, Sterling is seen being violently tackled and thrown to the pavement by an officer. Another video, shot by the owner of the store, Abdullah Muflahi, shows Sterling pinned to the ground. One officer is straddling him, holding what appears to be a gun to his chest while warning him not to move. The other officer, who kneeling by Sterling’s head, pulls his gun out of its holster when Sterling continues to struggle. One of the officers suddenly yells “Gun!”, and shots ring out as Sterling is hit repeatedly in the chest. He later died from his injuries. An unnamed witness told Baton Rouge newspaper the Advocate that Sterling had a gun but was neither holding it nor touching his pockets during the altercation. Shop owner Muflahi told the Advocate that officers retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the incident. The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting after protests in the community erupted immediately after the shooting. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said on Sunday that more than 7,000 people had been rescued by all participating agencies and volunteers since the flooding outbreak began.
"This is a serious event," Edwards said. "It is ongoing. It is not over."
The Associated Press reported Sunday that as many as 5,000 people were in shelters as a result of the widespread flooding.
The downpours have sent at least six river gauges to record levels in Louisiana. This includes the Amite River, which exceeded its previous record by over six feet in Magnolia, and by over four feet in Denham Springs.
Here's the latest on this flooding event.
Rescue Efforts In Full Force
Mike Steele, communications director for the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, told weather.com on Sunday that there was a huge spike in flood rescues overnight, mostly in the eastern half of Baton Rouge into Denham Springs.
"It’s kind of an all hands on deck," he said in a phone interview. "We still have a situation where motorists are stranded on I-12, and it remains closed between here and St. Tammany Parish, so the whole interstate system from Baton Rouge to that location is still closed."
Steele said the Louisiana State Police are n the process of airlifting supplies to those stranded along the interstate.
State police posted on Facebook that hundreds of cars were stranded on "islands" along the interstate in eastern Livingston Parish. Steele said some flooded spots were too deep for high water vehicles to traverse, while other spots littered with cars made it dangerous to attempt a helicopter landing.
Steele said more than 1,000 have been flooded in Baton Rouge, and that number that is expected to climb. In Livingston, more than 1,000 homes have been flooding, along with 200 in St. Helena Parish, and 500 or more in Tangipahoa Parish. Apart from residential damage, Steele said they are also monitoring nursing homes and hospitals in the area that could be impacted by rising water.
Steele said the Louisiana Air National Guard (LANG) has about 200 full-time employees working, plus about 750 guardsmen that have been deployed, a number that could climb to 1,000 soon. Additionally, he said 160 high water vehicles were in use as of last night, along with 35 watercraft, which brought the LANG rescue total to more than 3,500 people and 166 pets as of Sunday morning.
As more rain fell and floodwaters rose last night in the Baton Rouge area, Steele said buses were used to move people out of their communities. Steele then said as the water rapidly swelled, rescue efforts had to speed up with it.
"The water came up really fast overnight and we have more rain coming in now," he said. "It got so bad, I could hear concern on the scanners saying we needed to move the buses out of there fast."
Rescue efforts will persist into Sunday, but Steele pointed out that motorists need to be aware of the current conditions and avoid site-seeing amid storm damage to avoid putting a further strain on state resources.

On Friday, 68-year-old William Mayfield drowned trying to escape floodwaters near Zachary, Louisiana, as heavy rains piled up water in the northeastern regions of the state, NBC News reported.
"We were in the trailer just watching TV and then the water just started coming up," Vernon Drummond, Mayfield's roommate, told the station. "We were walking out and he slipped and fell. He went under the water. We tried to save him, but we couldn't."
Rescue crews in Zachary recovered Mayfield's body Friday morning, according to WAFB. Drummond says Mayfield is originally from Los Angeles and does not have any family in the area.
Four counties in Mississippi have been placed under a state of emergency, according to a release from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
"I want to make sure all Mississippians that were forced out of their homes by this flooding are taken care of," said Bryant in the release. "This state of emergency will ensure state resources are available to all local governments that need help."

According to Wilkinson County Chancery Clerk Thomas Tolliver Jr., residents left their homes Friday as the town was inundated by floodwaters. Some people were able to leave on their own, but others had to be rescued. Most were sent to shelters in Natchez.
Tolliver said most of the buildings in Crosby sustained water damage.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said on Sunday that more than 7,000 people had been rescued by all participating agencies and volunteers since the flooding outbreak began.
"This is a serious event," Edwards said. "It is ongoing. It is not over."
The Associated Press reported Sunday that as many as 5,000 people were in shelters as a result of the widespread flooding.
The downpours have sent at least six river gauges to record levels in Louisiana. This includes the Amite River, which exceeded its previous record by over six feet in Magnolia, and by over four feet in Denham Springs.
Here's the latest on this flooding event.
Rescue Efforts In Full Force
Mike Steele, communications director for the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, told weather.com on Sunday that there was a huge spike in flood rescues overnight, mostly in the eastern half of Baton Rouge into Denham Springs.
"It’s kind of an all hands on deck," he said in a phone interview. "We still have a situation where motorists are stranded on I-12, and it remains closed between here and St. Tammany Parish, so the whole interstate system from Baton Rouge to that location is still closed."
Steele said the Louisiana State Police are n the process of airlifting supplies to those stranded along the interstate.
State police posted on Facebook that hundreds of cars were stranded on "islands" along the interstate in eastern Livingston Parish. Steele said some flooded spots were too deep for high water vehicles to traverse, while other spots littered with cars made it dangerous to attempt a helicopter landing.
Steele said more than 1,000 have been flooded in Baton Rouge, and that number that is expected to climb. In Livingston, more than 1,000 homes have been flooding, along with 200 in St. Helena Parish, and 500 or more in Tangipahoa Parish. Apart from residential damage, Steele said they are also monitoring nursing homes and hospitals in the area that could be impacted by rising water.
Steele said the Louisiana Air National Guard (LANG) has about 200 full-time employees working, plus about 750 guardsmen that have been deployed, a number that could climb to 1,000 soon. Additionally, he said 160 high water vehicles were in use as of last night, along with 35 watercraft, which brought the LANG rescue total to more than 3,500 people and 166 pets as of Sunday morning.
As more rain fell and floodwaters rose last night in the Baton Rouge area, Steele said buses were used to move people out of their communities. Steele then said as the water rapidly swelled, rescue efforts had to speed up with it.
"The water came up really fast overnight and we have more rain coming in now," he said. "It got so bad, I could hear concern on the scanners saying we needed to move the buses out of there fast."
Rescue efforts will persist into Sunday, but Steele pointed out that motorists need to be aware of the current conditions and avoid site-seeing amid storm damage to avoid putting a further strain on state resources.

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — Two disturbing videos emerged this week showing the horrific death of a Louisiana man who was fatally shot at close range by police.
According to a statement published on the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Facebook page, a person called police just after midnight on Tuesday to report that a black man had threatened him with a gun. The man was described as wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a Triple S Food Mart. Two uniformed officers responded to the call and confronted the suspect, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, at the convenience store.
In a video taken from a nearby parked car, Sterling is seen being violently tackled and thrown to the pavement by an officer.
Another video, shot by the owner of the store, Abdullah Muflahi, shows Sterling pinned to the ground. One officer is straddling him, holding what appears to be a gun to his chest while warning him not to move. The other officer, who kneeling by Sterling’s head, pulls his gun out of its holster when Sterling continues to struggle.
One of the officers suddenly yells “Gun!”, and shots ring out as Sterling is hit repeatedly in the chest. He later died from his injuries.
An unnamed witness told Baton Rouge newspaper the Advocate that Sterling had a gun but was neither holding it nor touching his pockets during the altercation. Shop owner Muflahi told the Advocate that officers retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the incident.
The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting after protests in the community erupted immediately after the shooting. The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after shooting incidents.

Today’s ad, “Bobby Jindal: Bad for Louisiana's Economy,” was written by Truth Wins Out’s Wayne Besen, and produced by filmmaker Ben Nissen, with the assistance of Chicago-based writer and performance artist Eric Clements.
In our previous video, with nearly 25,000 views, a gay man who runs a theater company forbids a Christian from buying tickets to a show after he sees a cross hanging from his neck. Citing the fictitious “Church of Harvey Fierstein,” he directs the Christian to go to a theater that shows “Passion of the Christ.” This is a plausible example of what could occur under such ridiculous bills that allow the gutting of anti-discrimination laws based on declarations of “sincere” faith.
The first video in our campaign, “Religious Freedom Café,” takes these “religious liberty” bills to their logical conclusion. It focuses on an African American man who is told to leave a restaurant because serving black people is against the owner’s religious beliefs.

U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee highlighted the importance of the Jones Act to Louisiana's economy at a press conference.
According to the study, commissioned by the Transportation Institute and conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Louisiana's 54,850 maritime jobs pump more than $11.361 billion annually into the Louisiana economy. The study also found the state ranks first in the country in maritime jobs per capita, with one in every 83 jobs connected to the state's domestic maritime industry, nearly twice that of any other state.
"Maritime is the one of the largest industries in Louisiana, behind oil and gas and agriculture. But we wouldn't be standing here today to tout this economic prowess of the maritime industry in Louisiana if it weren't for the Jones Act. The Jones Act is a jobs act- pure and simple," Sen. Landrieu said. "I will continue to do all that I can to ensure the Jones Act is properly enforced and Louisiana maritime jobs are protected."
Sen. Landrieu has long been a strong supporter of the Jones Act. In 2011, she wrote a letter to the president criticizing the Administration's use of foreign vessels to transport crude oil within the United States during the ongoing Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) drawdown. The letter urged the use of domestic vessels and seafarers -- as required in the Jones Act -- in order to create jobs and improve the economy here at home.
Also in 2011, Sen. Landrieu introduced the American Mariners Job Protection Act, which would help restrict Jones Act waivers, improve transparency and prevent maritime work from going to foreign companies.
Sen. Landrieu was joined at the press conference by Chair of the Offshore Marine Service Association (OMSA) Robert Clemons.

This documentary covers over 300 years of history concerning the migration and development of modern day Cajuns. Our story starts in Poitou, France where persecution caused a group of French settlers to travel across the ocean to Nova Scotia, Canada. Here they established a new life for themselves and became known as the Acadians. Many years later as a result of English rule over the region, the Acadians were once again persecuted and forced to leave their homes and travel to many destinations. Crawfish – or crayfish – are small freshwater crustaceans that resemble small lobsters. And in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana they have become something people cannot live without. The state's crawfish industry dates back to pre-colonial times, and farming crawfish on flooded rice fields is now a regular part of the state’s food production. Our story starts in Poitou, France where persecution caused a group of French settlers to travel across the ocean to Nova Scotia, Canada. Here they established a new life for themselves and became known as the Acadians. Many years later as a result of English rule over the region, the Acadians were once again persecuted and forced to leave their homes and travel to many destinations. Several ended up in South Louisiana. Still known as Acadians, they thrived for many years in Louisiana until WWII. As a result of leaving the region to fight in the war, many for the first time met people outside of the Acadian community. The war galvanized the Acadians with Americanism. Now identified as Americans many returned home and slowly left the farms they were raised on to marry individuals outside of the Acadian culture. This led to the current race known as Cajuns. Although Cajuns are located throughout the world now, many still associate South Louisiana with the Cajun culture where the bulk continue to reside. This documentary in no way represents all of the events that helped shape the current Cajun culture. It is rather a synopsis of events that occurred which were part of the evolution of a culture which would become known as Cajun. I am sincerely appreciative to the three teams of multimedia students that contributed to this project. I would also like to thank the academic professionals, historians, trappers, and musicians that graciously contributed to this volume of work. Finally, I would like to thank the Target Corporation which provided the equipment to film and produce the film. My sincere hope is that you gain an appreciation of the Cajun people and that you come to understand the many aspects of the culture that are slowly fading such as; speaking French and living off the land as trappers, fisherman and farmers.

Mossville, Louisiana is an African-American community founded by freed slaves. Its residents suffer from health condtions, such as cancer, and mortality rates significantly higher than the U.S. national average due to disregard of human health and life by local oil refineries & chemical plants and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) refusal to regulate airborne dioxin. In 2001, a division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found levels of the dioxin compound vinyl chloride in the air in Mossville at concentrations 100 times what is permitted by federal law, and ethylene dichloride at 20 times -- but the report from the U.S. health agency, ATSDR, concluded, "The source of dioxin exposures in the Mossville residents is not known."
