By Deacon Nick Donnelly, on February 22nd, 2014% In his book ‘The Priest: His Dignity and Obligations’ St John Eudes wrote that God permits bad priests as a sign that He is thoroughly angry with His people. When God permits such things, it is a very positive proof that He is thoroughly angry with His people, and is visiting His most dreadful anger upon them. That is why He cries unceasingly to Christians, “Return, 0 ye revolting children . . . and I will give you pastors according to my own heart” (Jer. 3, 14-15). Thus, irregularities in the lives of priests constitute a scourge visited upon the people in consequence of sin.’ . . . → Read More: According to St John Eudes God permits bad priests as a sign that He is thoroughly angry with the sin of His people

By Deacon Nick Donnelly, on February 14th, 2014% Belgium’s children have been endangered in their mother’s wombs for decades through abortion and curettage, and now they are in danger of being killed in their beds at home or in hospital with the legalisation of euthanasia of children under the age of 18. Belgium’s euthanasia of children has opened the door for the Culture of Death practitioners to gradually push the boundaries of when its acceptable to kill a child. . . . → Read More: Endangered in their mother’s wombs for decades, now Belgian children are endangered in their beds
By Deacon Nick Donnelly, on February 12th, 2014% This booklet considers areas of the law relating to Religious Freedom and Discrimination, which are of specific interest to Catholic institutions and individual Catholics; in particular the exemptions in Discrimination law which apply to religious organisations in England, Wales and Scotland. The author offers a helpful introductory tour of the key issues and areas to be aware of, primarily for a Catholic audience though it may well be of assistance to members of other religions and Churches since many of the legal questions are common across religious boundaries. . . . → Read More: Neil Addison’s Guide to Religious Freedom and the Law is essential reading for conviction Catholics
By Deacon Nick Donnelly, on February 11th, 2014% Jacobi posts on the post-conciliar liturgy from the point of view of a ‘a bog-standard Catholic in the pews who has watched the liturgy of the Church go to pot over the last 50 years, so that it’s now a barrier to the raising of the heart and mind to God. Sacrosanctum Concilium is lengthy and imprecise in nature. There is strong evidence, of compromise. Changes are indicative and imprecise. Ambiguity, vagueness, insertion, contradiction and selective archaeologism are all present. One rather curious exception is the re-instatement of the “Prayer of the Faithful”, phased out some fifteen centuries ago. This changes completely the 5th century practise, which was conducted only by the priest, and required the non-baptised, or those under instruction to leave the Mass! The end result of this is that the Novus Ordo is a valid Catholic Mass, but is deficient because, it carries an implicit downplaying of the Real Presence, the Ordained Priesthood, and the idea of the Mass as a Sacrifice . . . → Read More: The liturgy of the Church has gone to pot over the last 50 years becoming a barrier to raising the heart and mind to God
By Deacon Nick Donnelly, on February 9th, 2014% I caught a virus a couple of weeks ago which has exacerbated a chronic disease, and I will only recover if I rest. Therefore I need to take a break from researching, editing and moderating Protect the Pope. Instead of closing the site down while I recover I’m going to try an experiment. I invite the faithful and loyal Catholic readers of Protect the Pope to research and write posts on issues that are of concern to the Protect the Pope readership and send them to me using the comment function. I will read the posts once a day and decide if they are suitable to be published. . . . → Read More: An experiment in reader participation on Protect the Pope during February
