The LGBT Catholics Westminster Pastoral Council (formerly known as the Soho Masses Pastoral Council) has expressed its rejection of the Church’s use of the term ‘objectively disordered’ in the context of homosexuality. The LGBT Catholics Westminster Pastoral Council received Archbishop Nichols’ pastoral mandate in 2013 to provide pastoral care to the persons with the homosexual inclination in the Archdiocese of Westminster. Cardinal-designate Nichols has made himself a hostage to fortune by giving his personal pastoral mandate to the Soho Masses Pastoral Council, now re-branded as the LGBT Catholics Westminster Pastoral Council. Commenting on the announcement that Archbishop Nichols is to be made a cardinal and his support for the Soho Masses Austen Ivereigh, the co-ordinator of Catholic Voices, has told The Guardian, ‘If anything, I think Francis would be extremely sympathetic to the Soho masses.’ Pope Francis hasn’t spoken on this issue, but he did indicate when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires that he was not sympathetic to what Austen Ivereigh calls an open-door policy in the church regarding the sacraments. In 2007 Cardinal Bergoglio presented pro-life guidelines on behalf of the Argentinian bishops. ‘Eucharistic coherence’ is important to Pope Francis, which means he holds that people cannot receive Holy Communion and at the same time act or speak against the commandments. Though the Soho Masses have ceased, the Soho Masses Pastoral Council continues at Farm Street under a different name, and with Archbishop Nichols mandate to provide pastoral care to the LGBT community of London. But this is not what the Soho Masses Pastoral Council does. The Soho Masses Pastoral Council celebrates and affirms this disordered sexual attraction. Archbishop Nichols must know this, but he decided not to disband the Soho Masses Pastoral Council and instead gave them his mandate to organise pastoral provision for homosexuals in London. This one move on his part has guaranteed that they will not integrate into an ordinary Catholic parish but will remain a distinct group.
