Product Description

THE CHARLATANS Tim Burgess, Mark Collins, Martin Blunt and Tony Rogers - release their twelfth album, MODERN NATURE on BMG Chrysalis on 26th January 2015.

To coincide with the release, the band also confirm an eight date UK tour kicking off on March 3rd in Bristol and finishing at The Roundhouse in London on March 16th.

The album comes after a brutally difficult year for the band following the death from brain cancer of their old friend and drummer Jon Brookes last year. Rogers says that they were determined to carry on to honour Brookes' memory - 'Jon was adamant that there was going to be another Charlatans record, and you have to put that into your own thoughts'

The band went into their studio Big Mushroom in January 2014 and as Tim recalls 'We were aching for the summer when we wrote it. It was freezing and we were trying to write songs that made us happy'

The result is Modern Nature. Featuring eleven new tracks, including the recent limited edition 7 single and 6 Music A List record Talking In Tones, the album was produced by The Charlatans and Jim Spencer and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Portishead). The album features a cacophony of contributors from their three temporary drummers - Pete Salisbury of The Verve, Stephen Morris of New Order and Gabriel Gurnsey of DFA's avant-disco group Factory Floor, to Kate Bushs' backing singers Melanie Marshall and Sandra Marvin, strings by Sean O Hagan and brass courtesy of Dexys Big Jim Paterson. Q have already described the album as 'one the finest of their career'

OK, so I'm a confirmed fan of The Charlatans however Modern Nature is another high water mark. It's packed with great songs and which have been produced to have a subtle, hazy, blissed out, somewhat melancholic, quality, and yet at its heart it's a life reaffirming album and frequently quite euphoric, despite being the first album by the band since losing founding member Jon Brookes to brain cancer. If you already like the band then I can confidently say you will like this, if you don't this is as good an entry point as any.

Soulful with tinges of 70's Classic Rock and a bit of disco here and there. It's a very accessible listen and steers a bit close to MOR in places but their best since Tellin Stories, which came after another tragic band member loss. It's rare I play the record twice in a row, but I did with Modern Nature.

MODERN NATURE
By Rob Jones

The Charlatans return with their best work for some time and the eleven tunes of ‘Modern Nature’ (BMG Records). This heavily funk and soul infused collection displays a famed indie edge and the recognisable Tim Burgess vocals ice the goods. However, this set is more Sly Stone meets The Rolling Stones cruising along with the sunroof down on a Californian highway. A strong selection of songs is stamped with mellifluous magic and it is impossible to step away from this record without feeling uplifted.
The Charlatans are an experienced band who has suffered their fair share of setbacks (with the deaths of band members Rob Collins and Jon Brookes to the fore). However, grief has made this act more intent on positive productivity and the ability to bounce back and deliver diligence is central to The Charlatans history.
On this occasion there are more than glimpses of brilliance as swathes of sweet, subtle sounds unfold To add to the core of the collection the lads can also throw in some Led Zeppelin ‘Kashmir’ meets Stone Roses ‘Second Coming’ style on the gargantuan ‘I need you to Know’. There are also the gems that are set to storm the stage and ‘Lean In’ has those classic components for the avid aficionado. Meanwhile, the charts should be littered with plenty of radio friendly tracks that deserve to be lauded e.g. ‘Come Home Baby’, ‘Talking in Tones’, So Oh’, ‘Let the times be never Ending’, ‘Keep Enough’, Trouble Understanding’, ‘In the tall Grass’, ‘Emilie’ and the list goes on!
The band marks the silver anniversary of their first recording but it is also congratulations on this remarkable recent release. Their past glories are renowned but ‘Modern Nature’ Tim and his team a credible future-and, as the 6 minutes 31 seconds of album centrepiece state ‘Let the good times be never Ending’.

Some beautiful music here, very melancholy tunes. Highlights are the two singles, Talking in Tones is one of the best emotional songs they have ever written. Trouble Understanding is a great piece of music too and should be a single. Jon Brookes would be proud of the lads in what they have turned out.

The Charlatans, now with Tim Burgess, Mark Collins, Martin Blunt and Tony Rogers making up the team, are one of the few big bands that emerged from that wonderful Britpop era, survived, despite more than their share of ups and downs (least of all, the untimely and tragic death of two of it's members), and are still making great music today. 'Modern Nature' is their 12th studio album, and a fitting tribute to their drummer Jon Brookes, who sadly passed away two years ago aged 44.

It's a refreshing change to hear such an established band still maintain their familiar sound, and offer a collection of mostly excellent quirky, upbeat and soulful songs, with catchy hooks and memorable melodies. After all these years, their music still excites me, and these guys really haven't lost anything. I particularly enjoy the tracks 'Come Home Baby', 'In the Tall Grass', the anthem-like 'Let the Good Times Be Never Ending', and the singles 'Talking In Tones' and 'So Oh'. On drumming duties, there's a variety of guest appearances from the likes of New Order's Stephen Morris, The Verve's Pete Sailsbury, and Gabe Guernsey from Factory Floor.

Overall, 'Modern Nature' is a perfect soundtrack to the Summer, and one of those special releases that was pratically made for chilling out to on a lazy Sunday. If you're a fan - you need to have this album.

With new solo albums from Noel Gallagher and Supergrass' frontman Gaz Coombes already available, the long awaited comeback album from Blur arriving next month, and Ash releasing another record in May, 2015 has already been a good year for fans of '90s indie-music icons. None of these excellent musicians are relying on their past glories, and The Charlatans are back to their creative best here.

Well they have done it again. The Charlatans, survivors not only in the music scene but with the deaths of two key players Rob Collins and Jon Brookes. Both would have been proud of this album. I have found that each time they release an album, you can guarantee it's individuality. A beautifully made album that takes much of it's sound from their 94-96 period.
The Charlatans a band underrated and should be cherished.

"Their best album in years" is what many of the critics have been saying and they're right. Surprisingly catchy and memorable tunes although no dancefloor fillers as this album is quite downbeat after the sad death of drummer Jon Brookes. A good addition to any 30 or 40 something's collection.
