Umpire Paul Reiffel struck on head during India v England Test in Mumbai

Australian umpire Paul Reiffel was taken to hospital and will not officiate in the remainder of the fourth Test between India and England after he was hit in the head by an outfield throw during the fourth Test between England and India in Mumbai.

Reiffel was standing at square leg in the second session when a throw from the boundary by Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck him. The 50-year-old former Test bowler fell to the ground and had lengthy treatment from England's medical staff before being led to the rooms. He was taken to hospital for a CT scan but was cleared of serious injury.

"Paul Reiffel underwent precautionary tests yesterday, which came back all clear," the Indian cricket board said in a statement. "Paul, however, has been advised to rest, which is the normal course prescribed following a concussion.

"As such, he will not take any further part in the Mumbai Test and has been replaced by Marais Erasmus."

Television umpire Marais Erasmus, who took over Reiffel's on-field duties after he left the field, will continue for the rest of the match.

The incident took place in the 49th over of England's innings, when debutant Keaton Jennings hit a ball from Ravi Ashwin past square leg. Kumar's throw had been intended for teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, who stood between Reiffel and the stumps, but as you can see from the footage, the attempt was badly underthrown.

Meanwhile, Jennings struck a century before off-spinner Ashwin led an Indian fightback with late wickets to leave the visitors 5-288 on the first day of the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium.

The touring side, trailing 2-0 in the five-match series, had been cruising on 2-230 thanks largely to left-handed opener Jennings who made 112 after being dropped on nought.

But Ashwin, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, picked up four wickets to peg back England who had been eyeing a large first innings total on a track already assisting the spinners.

At stumps honours were even with Ben Stokes unbeaten on 25 and Jos Buttler on 18.
