Abby never imagined that she would tandem breastfeed her two children. But when her new baby girl arrived and her two-year-old son wasn't ready to wean, she chose to just get on with it.
And now a gorgeous photo of Abby's first successful tandem feed has gone viral – and it's easy to see why.
The delightful Instagram snap, taken by Abby's husband, perfectly captures the joy the 27-year-old mum was feeling.
"This was the first time I nursed them both at the same time," Abby, from California, captioned the photo.
"My son is getting closer and closer to being two years old and my daughter is almost a month old. They are growing up far too fast already! There's a tremendous amount of bonding that you get when you nurse your little ones and man, it's crazy how it feels to be able to nurse both of them.
"My body is providing milk for not just one but for two of them. It's seriously amazing what our bodies can do.
"Brother seems to be nursing more now that little sister is here. But he's been pretty good at learning that sister needs 'milkies' first and that's all she eats. It took a little bit but I think he's starting to understand a little more."
Abby notes that her infectious smile in the photo is a testament to the joy she felt in the moment. "The look on my face is me saying; 'I'm doing it!' There are so many things I said I'd never do as a mom or that I won't be able to do ... but here I am. [I'm] doing these things and it's awesome," she explains.
Speaking to Essential Baby, Abby said that she thinks it's important for mums to share breastfeeding photos and experiences on social media. "We need to show people it's a normal and natural thing," she said.
Abby added that photos can help other women who are struggling with breastfeeding. "It's not easy to breastfeed sometimes, and it's not easy tandem nursing! But being able to share your experiences helps others not feel alone and helps them get through the hard stuff."
The messages Abby has received since sharing her photo have helped prove that it's important for mums to share their breastfeeding experiences, she says.
Of course, Abby didn't expect her photo to go viral the way that it has. "I am incredibly surprised by what's happened with my photo," she says.
"It was just a sweet moment captured by my husband and I didn't know it would reach so many people – it's amazing. I'm happy that I've been able to encourage other women on their breastfeeding journeys!"
