Ben Cousins fined, released from custody over VRO breach

Former AFL star Ben Cousins has been released from custody after pleading guilty to breaching a violence restraining order taken out on him by his former partner, Maylea Tinecheff.

The 38-year-old was fined $600 at Armadale Magistrates Court on Thursday after spending two nights in police custody.

During his first court appearance for the charge on Wednesday, representing himself, Cousins argued he had done nothing wrong when he was arrested by police in Canning Vale the day prior.

Nine News Perth reporter Renae Henry told Radio 6PR the former West Coast Eagles captain said he was dropping a vehicle at Ms Tinecheff's home for the family to use when the children ran out to see him.

"He claims that he was playing with [his children] in the park, that his ex-partner has then come out to join them in the park, and he claims it was her fault for approaching him and coming within 10 metres of him," Ms Henry said.

"He tried to put forward it wasn't his fault, that he was just spending time with his children that ran out to be with him and it was her that approached him."

The presiding magistrate remanded Cousins in custody during Wednesday's appearance, saying she needed to hear Ms Tinecheff's version of events before she made a decision.

He was fined $600 and released from custody on Thursday morning.

The Brownlow medallist still faces five unrelated charges stemming from two other arrests in October and November.

He is yet to enter pleas for two counts of possessing methamphetamine, two counts of breaching a violence restraining order and one count of breaching bail, for failing to appear at a November court hearing.

He will appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on December 13.

As part of his bail conditions for the charges, Cousins is not allowed to be within 50 metres of his former partner, and can only communicate with her via text to arrange visitation for his two children, aged three and five.
