Australia's new arbiter of responsible betting, the esteemed Stephen Conroy esq, has wasted no time getting across his new brief jumping a plane to Darwin on Thursday to take part in a betting industry confab.
The new head of the astroturfing outfit, Responsible Wagering Australia was among a grab-bag of online wagering house reps who travelled north to take part in a meeting convened by the NT Attorney-General's department (most of the large overseas betting houses are registered in the Territory, where they pay only a relatively piddling $550,000 licence fee to operate in Australia. Winning!)
From William Hill to Ladbrokes, Crownbet to Betfair, Lottoland to Luxbet – they were all there, taking a meeting with Licensing NT representatives – no doubt shoring up their sweet deal.
Meanwhile, down Canberra way, Minister for Human Services Alan Tudge was raising eyebrows by being among the first of his government colleagues to issue a press release welcoming Conroy's appointment.
It wasn't so long ago, after all, that Conroy was standing in the Senate calling the PM a liar and decrying Mitch Fifield's performance as communications minister.
Good career move Alan?
