Cardiac arrest, also known as cardiopulmonary arrest or circulatory arrest, is a sudden stop in effective blood circulation due to the failure of the heart to contract effectively or at all. Medical personnel may refer to an unexpected cardiac arrest as a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
A cardiac arrest is different from (but may be caused by) a myocardial infarction (also known as a heart attack), where blood flow to the muscle of the heart is impaired. It is different from congestive heart failure, where circulation is substandard, but the heart is still pumping sufficient blood to sustain life.
Arrested blood circulation prevents delivery of oxygen and glucose to the body. Lack of oxygen and glucose to the brain causes loss of consciousness, which then results in abnormal or absent breathing. Brain injury is likely to happen if cardiac arrest goes untreated for more than five minutes. For the best chance of survival and neurological recovery immediate treatment is important.

On July 24th 2010 a BBC camera crew arrived at Yorkshire Air Ambulance HQ to film the team as part of the Helicopter Heroes series. Shortly before 7am, emergency medical dispatcher, Chris Solomons, arrived at work feeling unwell. Chris's colleagues assessed him and it quickly became apparent he was suffering from a massive heart attack. Within minutes Chris had gone into cardiac arrest and his colleagues and a cameraman immediately began the battle to save his life - using CPR and an AED. Meanwhile, the cameras stayed rolling and captured this remarkable footage. With thanks to the BBC and Chris Solomons. Problems can cause abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias. There are many types of arrhythmia. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or it can stop beating. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurs when the heart develops an arrhythmia that causes it to stop beating. This is different than a heart attack, where the heart usually continues to beat but blood flow to the heart is blocked. There are many possible causes of SCA. They include coronary heart disease, physical stress, and some inherited ...

Like adults, a new study finds that hospitalized children who have suffered cardiac arrest have lower chances of surviving when CPR is performed on them at night than at other times of the day. UPI reports the finding is similar to what has been seen in studies of adult hospital patients. The authors of the new study called the lower nighttime survival rates "an important, yet under-recognized public health concern." After adjusting for factors that could skew their findings, the researchers found that kids who had CPR at night were 12 percent less likely to survive. It's not clear why children who undergo CPR at night are less likely to survive. The study was led by Dr. Farhan Bhanji, a pediatric critical care specialist at McGill University and Montreal Children's Hospital in Canada. Pub...
6,000 children in the U.S. suffer cardiac arrest in the hospital each year and what time of day it happens could affect their odds of survival. Researchers studied 12,000 children who received CPR for at least two minutes while hospitalized and there was a 12-percent lower rate of survival when they went into cardiac arrest overnight, compared to the day or evening. There was no difference between weekends and week days. Experts say they are unsure why the time of day impacts survival, but say these findings suggest a need for better training for hospital staffing and training at night.

Patients in cardiac arrest are the most seriously unwell people we see. Truly life-threatening, every second counts and it's important we get there as quickly as we can. But getting there is only half the story - once they're with the patient our crews have to act quickly, using vast amounts of equipment and drugs, to give them the best possible chance of survival. Here we take a look at exactly what our teams need to know how to use to help a single patient in cardiac arrest...
