The Fear

I have noticed this song being played a lot lately while I have been working and found it intriguing enough to google.

Its almost an anthem to consumer living yet the chorus goes:

I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore

I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore

When we think it will all become clear

‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

So I am wondering what ‘The Fear’ is?…

What do you think?

  1. Aye, it’s a total ‘how ridiculous is this consumer culture’ with the chorus offering the ‘genuine inner turmoil’ counterpoint.

The fear? I’m thinking it’s the fear of not fitting in with all that is in the verses and therefore being unsuccessful, becoming a nobody. For me the poetry of the lyrics say ‘If I do what I think is right (chorus)I become a nobody, but if I do what is successful I lose myself (become nobody)’.

I find the same feel in the Pussycat Dolls’, ‘When I grow up’. To me it’s Ecclesiates’ cry for help with the last chapter’s answer missing… Useless, everything is useless, but what else is there?

But I have this idea that Ecclesiates is a good presentation of the gospel to a generation of dissillusioned materialists, I could be a bit biased. 😉
