BENGALURU: The high court has directed the Fee Regulatory Committee to probe a complaint filed on behalf of MBBS student Sahana, alleging that she was forced to surrender her seat as the Mangaluru-based Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences demanded more than the prescribed fee. A division bench headed by Justice Jayant M Patel instructed the panel to complete the inquiry before February 7, 2017 and submit a report before February 10. The next hearing is on February 13. The complaint filed by Sahana's father was appended in the statement of objections filed by KEA in its response to the petition filed by Aousaf Hussain, a student from Lakshadweep islands.
Sahana had complained to KEA on October 17 that the management forced her to withdraw her admission as she was unable to pay fee of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh every year. "If this is true, it would be a case of exploitation of a student by the management to extract money in the name of fees or otherwise. It appears that there's an attempt to compel the student to make one seat available in the KEA quota to protect admission already granted to another student. It can be termed "unethical" and is against the standards to be maintained by any medical college," the division bench observed.
Interim prayer refused:
The court refused to grant interim prayer sought by Aousaf Hussain who had challenged discontinuation of his course from October 10 based on the advice of KEA. He got admission by paying a course fee of Rs 5,75,000 and an additional fee Rs 1,45,000 towards hostel rent and mess fee on September 30 through management quota. He had also challenged admission given to Bengaluru-based Uniasa Zainab on October 13, based on the communication sent by KEA.
