Dargah Sharif or Ajmer Sharif is a sufi shrine of sufi saint, Moinuddin Chishti located at Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. The main gate to the shrine is the Nizam Gate, following which is Shahjahani Gate which was erected by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. Located in the heart of Rajasthan, Ajmer is a small town. Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage center for Muslims as well as Hindus.
Ajmer Sharif is a shrine of the sufi saint, Moinuddin Chisti. The entrance gate of the Dargah is known as Buland Darwaza and it was constructed by Sultan Mahmood Khilji of the Malwa Sultanate. Every year in the month of April or May, an Urs is celebrated at Ajmer-e-Sharif. This religious festival is observed to mark the death anniversary of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and the event is held over six days.
Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti is known by various names like Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, “Sultan-Ul-Hind”, Khwaja Baba, Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Ajmeri, Khwaja Sahib, Khwaja Ajmeri or Sant Moinuddin Chishty.
As a final resting place of this venerated Sufi Saint, muslims from different parts of the country as well as from all over the world come to the Dargah to pay obeisance. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek blessings from the Khawaja. Devotees visit the holy Dargah to pay homage during this occasion.
The main attraction of the Urs is the Kalanders known as the friends of Garib Nawaz. They come from different parts of the country and walk in the procession to celebrate the sacred festival. They also offer ‘chadars’ at the dargah of the saint. They perform bizarre stunts in the procession. Some of the Kalandars show street magic while others pop out their eyes with pointy knives.
Devotees who come to pay obeisance, bring chadars along with them. They go to Shahjahani Hauz and perform the sacred ritual of Wuzu with the holy water. Wuzu is the practice of washing oneself in Islam before each prayer or namaz. After the ritual they visit the dargah to offer their Chaddar. They pass through the Jannati Darwaza to get rid of their problems. It is said that those who are unable to visit Mecca, come to this dargah which is considered almost as holy.
The Shahjahani Mosque stands tall in the dargah premises, which is an outstanding piece of Mughal architecture. The mosque was built by Shah Jahan in memory of Hazrat Khwaza Moinuddin Chisty.
In the evening, before prayer, the ritual lighting takes place. Savants of the shrine bring lamps inside the tomb, accompanied by the beating of drums in the background. After the ritual, the lamps are placed in the four corners of the tomb.
Immediately after this ritual, the candle touching ceremony starts, in which savants of the dargah touch candles to each person’s head before offering it to the Khwaja. It is considered to be one of the most significant rituals of the Dargah.
After completion of all these rituals, the evening Namaz starts. Women are not allowed to do Namaz alongside men but have seperate section in which to pray.
Inside Dargah Sharif there are two big pots known as ‘Degs’ – the Badi Deg and the Choti deg. People put offerings of money, food items, clothes etc. in these degs.
One of the major attractions at the dargah are the qawwali programs organised during the famous annual Urs in the evenings. Sufi Qawwals from all over the country come to the Ajmer Urs and dedicate their Qawwali to Garib Nawaz.

Ajme is the 5th largest city in Rajasthan and is the centre of the eponymous Ajmer District. Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It is a pilgrimage centre for the shrine of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. The Dargāh Sharīf of Khwāja Muinuddīn Chishti is situated at the foot of the Tārāgaṛh hill, and consists of several white marble buildings arranged around two courtyards, including a massive gate donated by the Nizām of Hyderabad and the Akbari Mosque, built by the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān. It contains the domed tomb of the saint. Akbar and his queen used to come here by foot on pilgrimage from Agra every year in observance of a vow when he prayed for a son. Taragarh Fort, the fort guarding Ajmer, was the seat of the Chauhan rulers. It is reputed to be one of the oldest hill forts in India and the world. It was built by King Ajaypal Chauhan on the summit of Taragarh Hill and overlooks Ajmer. The battlements run along the top of the hill. The walls are two miles (3 km) in circumference and the fort can only be approached by way of a very steep slope. When it fell to the British Raj, the fort was dismantled on the orders of Lord William Bentinck and was converted into a sanatorium for the British troops stationed at the garrison town of Nasirabad.

Ajmer
Ajmer (pronounced [ədʒmeːr]) is the fifth largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan and is the centre of the eponymous Ajmer District. According to the 2011 census, Ajmer has a population of around 551,360 in its urban agglomeration and 542,580 in the city. The city is located at a distance of 135 km from the state capital Jaipur and 391 km from the national capital New Delhi.
Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It is a pilgrimage centre for the shrine of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and is also the base for visiting Pushkar (11 km), an ancient Hindu pilgrimage city, famous for the temple of Brahma.
Prithviraj Chauhan (1149–1192 CE), of the Chauhan dynasty, ruled Ajmer along with Delhi during the latter half of the 12th century. He succeeded to the throne at the age of 13, and ruled from the twin capitals of Ajmer and Delhi, and was the last independent Hindu king to sit upon the throne of Delhi.
Ajmer has been selected as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah
Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Ajmer Dargah, Ajmer Sharif or Dargah Sharif is a sufi shrine (Dargah) of sufi saint, Moinuddin Chishti located at Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. The shrine has the grave (Maqbara) of the revered saint, Moinuddin Chisti.
The Shrine
The main gate to the shrine is the Nizam Gate, followed by the Shahjahani Gate, erected by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. In turn it is followed by the Buland Darwaza, built by Sultan Mahmood Khilji, upon which is hoisted the urs flag, marking the beginning of the death anniversary rituals. The urs for Moinuddin Chishti is celebrated every year on the 6th and 7th of Rajab.
Kalanders
The main attraction of the Urs are the kalanders from Mehrauli, called the friends of Gharib Nawaz, walk to Ajmer all the way from Delhi every year. They offer colourful chadders with gold and silver threads...

The dargah (shrine) of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is an international wakf (endowment), managed under The Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955 of Government of India. The Dargah Committee, appointed by the Government, takes care of the maintenance of the shrine, and runs charitable institutions like dispensaries, and guest houses for the devotees but do not care take the rituals of the main shrine(Mazar sharif/Astana e Alia) which is under the Custody of inherited Priests known as Khadims. .

Moinuddin Chishti
Moinuddin Chishti (1141 - 1236) also known as Gharīb Nawāz (Benefactor of the Poor), was an imam, Islamic scholar and philosopher from South Asia. Chishti introduced and established the Chishti Order of Sufism in the Indian subcontinent. The initial spiritual chain or silsila of the Chishti order in India, comprising Chishti, Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, Fariduddin Ganjshakar and Nizamuddin Auliya—each successive person being the disciple of the previous—includes the great Sufi saints of Indian history. Various Mughal emperors were followers of Chishti.
Early life and background
No reliable information is available regarding his life before he settled in Ajmer.
Moinuddin Chishti is said to have been born in 536 AH/1141 CE in Chisht in a city between Afghanistan and Iran and is thought to be a "sayyid", a direct descendant of Muhammad. His parents died when he was fifteen years old. He inherited a windmill and an orchard from his father. During his childhood, Chishti was different from other children and kept himself busy in prayer and meditation. He later disposed of his property and other belongings and distributed the money to the poor. He renounced the world and left for Bukhara in search of knowledge and higher education.

Taragarh Fort, AJMER
Taragarh Fort, the fort guarding Ajmer, was the seat of the Chauhan rulers. It is reputed to be one of the oldest hill forts in India and the world. It was built by King Ajaypal Chauhan on the summit of Taragarh Hill and overlooks Ajmer. The battlements run along the top of the hill. The walls are two miles (3 km) in circumference and the fort can only be approached by way of a very steep slope. When it fell to the British Raj, the fort was dismantled on the orders of Lord William Bentinck and was converted into a sanatorium for the British troops stationed at the garrison town of Nasirabad.

Located in the heart of Rajasthan, Ajmer is a small town. Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage center for Muslims as well as Hindus.
Ajmer Sharif is a shrine of the sufi saint, Moinuddin Chisti. The entrance gate of the Dargah is known as Buland Darwaza and it was constructed by Sultan Mahmood Khilji of the Malwa Sultanate. Every year in the month of April or May, an Urs is celebrated at Ajmer-e-Sharif. This religious festival is observed to mark the death anniversary of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and the event is held over six days.
Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti is known by various names like Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, “Sultan-Ul-Hind”, Khwaja Baba, Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Ajmeri, Khwaja Sahib, Khwaja Ajmeri or Sant Moinuddin Chishty.
As a final resting place of this venerated Sufi Saint, muslims from different parts of the country as well as from all over the world come to the Dargah to pay obeisance. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek blessings from the Khawaja. Devotees visit the holy Dargah to pay homage during this occasion.
The main attraction of the Urs is the Kalanders known as the friends of Garib Nawaz. They come from different parts of the country and walk in the procession to celebrate the sacred festival. They also offer ‘chadars’ at the dargah of the saint. They perform bizarre stunts in the procession. Some of the Kalandars show street magic while others pop out their eyes with pointy knives.
Devotees who come to pay obeisance, bring chadars along with them. They go to Shahjahani Hauz and perform the sacred ritual of Wuzu with the holy water. Wuzu is the practice of washing oneself in Islam before each prayer or namaz. After the ritual they visit the dargah to offer their Chaddar. They pass through the Jannati Darwaza to get rid of their problems. It is said that those who are unable to visit Mecca, come to this dargah which is considered almost as holy.
The Shahjahani Mosque stands tall in the dargah premises, which is an outstanding piece of Mughal architecture. The mosque was built by Shah Jahan in memory of Hazrat Khwaza Moinuddin Chisty.
In the evening, before prayer, the ritual lighting takes place. Savants of the shrine bring lamps inside the tomb, accompanied by the beating of drums in the background. After the ritual, the lamps are placed in the four corners of the tomb.
Immediately after this ritual, the candle touching ceremony starts, in which savants of the dargah touch candles to each person’s head before offering it to the Khwaja. It is considered to be one of the most significant rituals of the Dargah.
After completion of all these rituals, the evening Namaz starts. Women are not allowed to do Namaz alongside men but have seperate section in which to pray.
Inside Dargah Sharif there are two big pots known as ‘Degs’ – the Badi Deg and the Choti deg. People put offerings of money, food items, clothes etc. in these degs.
One of the major attractions at the dargah are the qawwali programs organised during the famous annual Urs in the evenings. Sufi Qawwals from all over the country come to the Ajmer Urs and dedicate their Qawwali to Garib Nawaz.

According to the Hindu scripture Padma Purana, Brahma saw the demon Vajranabha (Vajranash in another version) trying to kill his children and harassing people. He immediately slew the demon with his weapon, the lotus-flower. In this process, the lotus petals fell on the ground at three places, creating three lakes: the Pushkar Lake or Jyeshta Pushkar (greatest or first Pushkar), the Madya Pushkar (middle Pushkar) Lake, and Kanishta Pushkar (lowest or youngest Pushkar) lake. When Brahma came down to the earth, he named the place where the flower ("pushpa") fell from Brahma's hand ("kar") as "Pushkar".
Brahma then decided to perform a yajna (fire-sacrifice) at the main Pushkar Lake. To perform his yajna peacefully without being attacked by the demons, he created the hills around the Pushkar — Ratnagiri in the south, Nilgiri in the north, Sanchoora in the west and Suryagiri in the east — and positioned gods there to protect the yajna performance. However, while performing the yajna, his wife Savitri (or Sarasvati in some versions) could not be present at the designated time to perform the essential part of the yajna as she was waiting for her companion goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati and Indrani. So Brahma married Gurjar girl, Gayatri and completed the yajna with his new consort sitting beside him, holding the pot of amrita (elixir of life) on her head and giving ahuti (offering to the sacrificial fire).
When Savitri finally arrived at the venue she found Gayatri sitting next to Brahma which was her rightful place. Agitated, she cursed Brahma that he would be never worshipped, but then reduced the curse permitting his worship in Pushkar. Savitri also cursed Indra to be easily defeated in battles, Vishnu to suffer the separation from his wife as a human, the fire-god Agni who was offered the yajna to be all-devouring and the priests officiating the yajna to be poor. Endowed by the powers of yajna, Gayatri diluted Savitri's curse, blessing Pushkar to be the king of pilgrimages, Indra would always retain his heaven, Vishnu would be born as the human Rama and finally unite with his consort and the priests would become scholars and be venerated. Thus, the Pushkar temple is regarded the only temple dedicated to Brahma.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Savitri, thereafter, moved into the Ratnagiri hill and became a part of it by emerging as a spring known as the Savitri Jharna (stream); a temple in her honour exists here.[6]
