Starting a business? Remember Facebook was once a crazy idea

Question: What is your top tip for starting a business?

Founder of leading PR and digital agency Spin&Co Sam Mangan says:

My top tip is to make sure you’re aware of what you’re up for – go online and funnily enough the Government has some great websites which will give you advice on what you really need to set up. I would advise really taking time (which is really tedious) however is so necessary you do the correct procedure for setting up. Making sure you have your accounts and financials and all those things in place so that when things start to really get serious and when they start to get overwhelming you’re not trading without the correct framework because if you do, you’ll end up in much more of a mess than you want to be so do that from day one and once you’ve got that idea try and form it out.

If you can speak to some friends or family, get an idea of their thoughts and find out what they think about some of the concepts that you’ve got or the business idea that you have. Don’t be discouraged because you’ll often find people say that its crazy or its stupid – that’s standard. It’s good to have these opinions though as you want to make sure you have the best version of your business idea and some people may be able to give you some good insight and I wouldn’t reject that especially in the early stages.
