Southern Ontario: Seven Years Against Prison - Reportback on NYE demos

New years in Southern Ontario wouldn't be complete without a festive expression of our rage against prisons and the world which requires them. For the seventh year running, we brought the party to several local institutions of control and isolation, in order to show those trapped inside for the holidays that they aren't alone.

"We love to party and celebrate on New Year’s and this tradition has allowed us to do so in a spirit of antagonism and solidarity. We can have fun in a way that actually inspires us and that brings some joy to people who are locked up. Connecting through the walls with prisoners is a direct action against the alienation and separation that prison creates and it transforms the urban space, bringing in to focus the prisons that dot the landscape and making vivid the coercive violence of the state that controls our lives. Prison impacts us every day, whether or not we’re locked up, and the New Year’s Noise Demos make this conflict tangible."

Manifesto of M.I.A – Movimento Insurgente Anarquista (Insurgent Anarchist Movement) Marie Mason Cell

Between the end of November and the beginning of December, two ancient trees were cut down in the square outside the Our Lady of Remedies church at the behest of the Osasco-Sao Paulo municipal authorities.

And, in August 2015, the armed branches of government assassinated more than 20 people in one night in the regions of Osasco, Barueri, Carapicuiba and Itapevi. All the people who were assassinated came from the favelas and the barrios away from the center of these fascist states.

In response to these assassinations, we have brought our fire to one of the veins that keeps this oppressive system alive. Even though it will not bring back the trees that resisted the concrete of this unhealthy civilization nor will it bring back the lives of the people who became victims of genocide caused by these Nazis, we claim full responsibility for the arson attack against the Bradesco bank branch located at number 924 São José avenue in Osasco, Sao Paulo that took place at dawn on December 16th.

Since the democratic state dismantled and wiped out the leftist armed struggle organizations which continued operating once the dictatorship ended in the early 90s, there have been the ideas and practices of horizontality and direct action from revolutionary autonomous environments and related to anarchy – and also the Mapuche resistance, which have positioned themselves as protagonists of radical struggle against Capital, the State and authority in Chile.

This was done in solidarity with Greek comrades‘ call for an international Black December.
