Sparrow Records is a Christian music record label and a division of Universal Music Group.

Background

Sparrow Records was founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn, then A&R director at Myrrh Records. Purchased by EMI in 1992, it is now part of the EMI Christian Music Group, and has been named by Billboard Magazine as "America's Best Christian Music Record Label". Sparrow Records rose to prominence with the signing of singer, songwriter, Contemporary Christian musician and minister Keith Green. Within a year of his 1976 signing by Sparrow, Keith Green was the top selling Christian artist in America.

As of 2009, Sparrow's artists include Britt Nicole, Chris Tomlin, Mandisa, Matt Redman, Matthew West, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Switchfoot. Since 1996, a popular production of Sparrow Records has been the annual WOW Hits contemporary Christian music series. The WOW franchise then added the annual WOW Gospel series of albums in 1998. The WOW Worship series was introduced in 1999, an annual compilation of the greatest hits in contemporary worship music.

Crowder (musician)

David Wallace Crowder (born November 29, 1971), known by his mononymous stage name Crowder, is an American folktronica musician. He was the lead singer in the now defunct David Crowder Band. As of 2012, Crowder is making a solo career for himself on sixstepsrecords and Sparrow Records labels, and released his first solo album Neon Steeple on May 27, 2014. Crowder released his first solo single off the forthcoming album entitled "I Am" on November 25, 2013, which rose to the No. 3 position on the Christian Songs chart.

History

Crowder was the lead vocalist in the David Crowder Band that disbanded in 2012. In 2012, Crowder started making a solo career for himself on the dual label sixstepsrecords and Sparrow Records.

Crowder released his debut solo studio album on May 27, 2014 entitled Neon Steeple; the lead single off of the album was "I Am" that charted at No, 3 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, which released on November 25, 2013. The album was originally slated for release February 18, 2014, but was pushed back due to "unavoidable circumstances." Crowder began his nationwide Neon Steeple tour September 30, 2014.

Since the creation and increased popularity of YouTube, mainstream artists now promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the site for their upcoming song and music video. Consequentially, YouTube has been converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market themselves to their fans and audiences.
