Police said they are "leaving no stone unturned" in the hunt for a suspect, following a grisly killing in Townsville overnight.
A 59-year-old woman died at a home in the suburb of Deeragun after suffering "significant head injuries", according to police.
Neighbours called police at 12.15am and reported hearing a disturbance. Paramedics treated the woman but she was declared dead at the Innes Drive home, and police set up a crime scene.
Police are still searching for the suspect, and Regional Crime Coordinator Superintendent Ray Rohweder said they would have been covered in blood.
"Due to the nature of the injuries that have been received by this lady, there is no doubt that the person that inflicted the injuries would have a significant amount of blood on them," he said.
"So anyone that's aware of anyone coming home in the early hours of the morning with a significant amount of blood on their person, please contact the police."
Superintendent Rohweder said a break and enter gone wrong is a line of enquiry they're looking into, but said police won't be ruling any motives out at this stage.
"There were a number of incidents in the area last night. Those incidents are forming the basis of our inquiries."
He said police had also found items relating to the incident near the highway, and were hunting for a potential witness.
"A person we believe is a significant witness and was seen exiting the house and going through the yard next door," he said.
He said police had not made any arrests in relation to the death yet, but he was "fairly confident" they would locate the perpetrator.
"We will find this person. Townsville is a safe place to live," he said.
"Your local police will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week until this person is behind bars.
"Without doubt it's an absolute tragedy and it's a tragedy for a town like Townsville."
Police said they should have a description of a potential suspect this afternoon.
