AACTA Awards: uncomfortable moments

Edwina Bartholomew maintains her professional cool despite awkward exchanges with Mel Gibson and Geoffrey Rush on the red carpet in Pyrmont, Sydney. Vision: Channel Seven.

Bartholomew, who was the weather presenter for Sunrise until January and is now the show's entertainment reporter, introduced herself simply as "Edwina", leaving Gibson to ask who she was not once, but twice.

The presenter, 33, was left red-faced once again when Geoffrey Rush also ignored her and walked right past as she tried to grab the 65-year-old for an interview.

"Mel Gibson welcome to the AACTAs red carpet. I'm Edwina, pleasure to see you," the Seven stablemate said, shaking his hand.

"Who are you?" Gibson bluntly replied.

"I'm very, very well," Bartholomew said, mishearing the director. "More to the point how are you? You're the man of the evening."

But LA-based Gibson still wanted to know who she was.

"I'm good but I mean who are you?"

"I'm Edwina."

Gibson's film Hacksaw Ridge swept the night, winning best film, best actor and best director.

Twitter users watching Seven's red carpet coverage described it as "brutal" and a "car crash".

"The AACTAs red carpet on Seven was brutal but I just couldn't look away," wrote one person.

"Mel Gibson just summed up what all of Australia is thinking...who the hell is Edwina Bartholomew...even she had trouble explaining it," tweeted another person.

At another point in the evening, Geoffrey Rush approached Bartholomew on the red carpet before changing his mind and walking off.

"Geoffrey, good to see you," she said as he proceeded to walk past her. "See? Look at that. See how gracious I was letting him pass by? See you Geoffrey."

But Bartholomew took the night of awkward encounters in her stride, laughing about the Gibson incident later on Instagram.

"Highlights include Mel Gibson asking who the hell I was," she wrote on Instagram sharing a picture of her blue dress.

Bartholomew replaced Grant Denyer as Sunrise's weather presenter in 2013. After three years on the road, she was brought back to the show's Martin Place studios as a permanent fifth member.

As part of her role she covers entertainment stories for Sunrise but appears to be still working on her celebrity contacts.
