When a new venue opens focused squarely on toast, the question has to be asked if Sydney has finally jumped the shark with food.

"We've copped some negative stuff, asking how much more Bondi can you get?" says Jack Warwick, owner of Mr Topper's Toast Bar. "I'm always open to criticism, and you can't keep everyone happy. Sure it's simple, but everyone grew up eating toast and it's good value," he says.

Warwick, who has a background in sales and marketing and dabbled in food projects in the past, says inspiration for the idea came when he felt Sydney breakfasts had become over complicated. Warwick describes himself as a "Vegemite and melted cheese guy" in his youth.

These days it's a little fancier; Mr Topper's covering toast in everything from smoked salmon and creme fraiche to poached chicken and aioli.
