New look Samoa Games under way but guest of honour has to cry off

Updated December 07, 2016 08:48:03

The Samoa Games have been revived after 10 years, with events taking place on the main island of Upolu this week, to be followed by a separate competition on Savaii next week.

Unfortunately the plan to have weightlifter Ele Opologe as guest of honour hasn't worked out, as she waits for further news of her promotion to silver medal status at the Beijing Olympics.

Fa'amausili Taiva is the chief executive of SASNOC, the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee and he says by splitting the Games between the two islands, the hope is that more athletes with the potential to join an elite training group for the 2020 Olympics in Japan will be identified.
