Guatemala (i/ˌɡwɑːtᵻˈmɑːləˌ ɡwæ-ˌ ɡɑː-/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə, GWAT-ə-MAH-lə or GAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.

In 2012, Guatemala was ordered by an American Human Rights Commission to make emergency improvements to the Federico Mora Hospital to "save lives". The government promised to comply. But an undercover BBC investigation found little has changed. The government defends conditions in the hospital, says it has begun improving mental health care in the country and has ordered an investigation into sex...

Guatemala's Economy Minister Sergio de la Torre opened his presentation on the country's path for economic development stressing the need to invest in social inclusion in order for economic growth to be sustainable. At the same time, he noted that without accelerating productivity and growing the economy, social development is not possible. The minister listed the country's major infrastructure projects, highlighting two main ways to grow the economy: a heavy industrial corridor that would integrate trade with Mexico, which would "open the doors to NAFTA" and lower energy costs in Guatemala by 75 percent; and a goods manufacturing corridor, with logistics to integrate Central America's markets and develop four cities in Guatemala, which the government chose as special development zones.

The 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état was a covert operation organized by the United States Central Intelligence Agency to overthrow Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán, the democratically-elected President of Guatemala. Árbenz's government put forth a number of new policies, such as seizing and expropriating unused, unfarmed land that private corporations set aside long ago and giving the land to peasants. The U.S. intelligence community deemed such plans communist in nature. This led CIA director Allen Dulles to fear that Guatemala would become a "Soviet beachhead in the western hemisphere". Dulles' concern reverberated within the CIA and the Eisenhower administration, in the context of the anti-communist fears of the McCarthyist era. Árbenz instigated sweeping land reform acts that antagonized the U.S.-...
Strengthening the capabilities of rural people to take advantage of opportunities in the rural non-farm economy is essential according to the Rural Poverty Report 2011, prepared by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). When rural women are able to access better paid jobs outside of the agricultural sector it benefits their families as well as the wider economy. In this video, María Ana Lagog González, a weaver from Guatemala, talks about how she has been able to offer her family a better future through weaving. Coffee production in Guatemala began to develop in the 1850s. Coffee is an important element in the economy of Guatemala. Guatemala was Central America's top producer of coffee for most of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, until overtaken by Honduras in 2011. Illegal exports to Honduras and Mexico are not reflected in official statistics. The coffee industry began to develop in Guatemala in the 1850s and 1860s, initially mixing its cultivation with cochineal. Small plantations flourished in Amatitlán and Antigua areas in the southwest.[4] Initial growth though was slow due to lack of knowledge and technology. Many planters had to rely on loans and borrow from their families to finance their coffee estates (fincas) so coffee production in the country grew increasing non-Guate...

My father was a traveler and spoke 7 languages fluently. I remember being fascinated by the maps, pictures, and relics he brought home with him. When I was a boy he and I traveled by bus from one end of Mexico to the other staying in the homes of random people and taking in all of what Mexico had to offer (large cockroaches, hot food and all!) . I guess some of that rubbed off on me. I speak Spanish and English fluently, and can get by in German, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese. Travel video from a 2 week trip to Guatemala in 2016. Our time was spent doing volunteer work, hiking up a volcano and experiencing the Guatemalan culture. It was amazing learning about another country: the language, food, music, cities and art. From Guatemalan tortilla making to lighting fireworks off the roof of the house, I will never forget the people that we met there and the experience that we had. Thank you to everyone who was apart of my first real travel experience.

SANTA CRUZ, GUATEMALA --In rural areas of Guatemala, the indigenous Mayans have been economically marginalized for decades. One of the biggest challenges they face is finding sustainable jobs, beyond seasonal agricultural work. Luckily, a fantastic local non-profit called Amigos de Santa Cruz has constructed CECAP, which is a vocational educational center for the local Mayan inhabitants of Santa Cruz. One of the greatest successes of CECAP has been the culinary arts program, as all 17 of the graduates from the first two years have steady work as cooks in hotels and restaurants in the area. Building upon this success, we offered to help them develop their program, as they are looking for ways to make the program self-sustainable. In order to expand their menu and bake goods they can then...

Guatemala has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Latin American, a rate which increases significantly among the rural indigenous populations. As such, the Guatemalan Red Cross has identified maternal and child health as a priority area of work. One of the areas where the GRC's Maternal and Child Health program is currently being carried out is the western Department of San Marcos, with the support of the Norwegian Red Cross. The branch volunteers help to organize the women of the communities in support groups, to help each other learn about good practices relating to feeding and nutrition, prevention of illness, prenatal control, and the healthy development of children. Community health committees are formed and meet regularly to analyse the health situation of the ...

Guatemala goes beyond conventional tourism, today is one of the most attractive destinations for those who are seeking health and wellness tourism. In Guatemala City there is a district called Health City which brings together private medical centers, diagnostic centers, medical professionals and providers, all with leading-edge technology and techniques in medical specialties such as orthopedics, cancer treatment, fertility centers, cardiac rehabilitation among other services.
Guatemala has the highest infant mortality rate in Central America. And approximately half of all children in the country are malnourished. A government project, supported by the World Bank tries to alleviate the problem by bringing health services and advice to the Guatemalan countryside.

Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigeno...

And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish. It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compellin...
