Former Nationals MP and current CEO of Racing Australia Peter McGauran will kick off the new year in a new gig with wagering house Tabcorp.

He will join Tabcorp as a "special racing adviser" in January. The role is not only expected to leverage the former Gippsland MP's political connections, but also draw on his relationships with state-based racing authorities (think Racing NSW and Racing Queensland) ahead of the proposed $11.3 billion merger of Melbourne-based Tabcorp and the Brisbane-based Tatts. God (and Rod Sims) willing.

McGauran spent an inordinate amount of time in the Tabcorp marquee at Derby Day this year. We thought he was there just to punt – clearly not.

Word on the track is that an announcement on McGauran's replacement at Racing Australia will be made in the next day or so – and according to sources it's going to be a big name, from the world of politics, with an even higher profile. We're all aquiver with anticipation ...
