When Wendy Cruz-Chan's son Killian was stillborn she was, of course, devastated. But the New York doula and lactation consultant was determined that something positive would come from the tragedy, and set about doing what she could to help other babies.

Three days after losing her son, Cruz-Chan pumped began pumping breast milk to donate to babies in need.

She set a goal of 2000 ounces (about 59 litres) of milk, reaching that target earlier this month.

"I had pumped and donated 2038 ounces of my breastmilk to 6 babies," she wrote on Facebook.

"I had finally reached my personal goal at over 2000 oz in 3 months. Now it's time to end my lactation journey and concentrate on myself as I get my body ready for the next pregnancy."

While she explained it was sometimes difficult to express every three to four hours, including overnight, the process helped her heal following Killian's death.

"It was so worth it. Seeing those babies thriving from my milk, really helped me through my healing process. I know I'm going to miss lactating," she wrote.

"I wanted to show that even after a tragic stillbirth, you can turn that into something positive and inspire those around you. Through my grief I evolved and learned to pull myself out of the darkness."

Cruz-Chan's Facebook post about her awesome effort attracted recognition around the world, receiving 35,000 likes and being shared more than 16,000 times.

"Wow what a wonderful, generous way to process your grief. Sending love on your journey and best of luck with your next pregnancy," one commenter wrote.

"You are a true hero! It is amazing how you turned your tragedy into something positive and a blessing for others! You are truly amazing! My God bless you and your unselfishness!" said another.

Although her pumping days are over, Cruz-Chan is continuing with other plans to honour Killian's memory.

The mum, who already has a daughter Ariya with her husband John, intends to raise money to buy CuddleCots for New York hospitals.

"All this for the unconditional love for my Killian in heaven. All this to break the silence of stillbirths," she wrote.
