I've enjoyed reading your comments. You've got a good outlook on the Afghan mission. I too support the mission. I just wish the parliamentary opposition parties and other Canadians felt the way I do.

It is worth sifting through all of the filth in here to find a perspective such as yours. I hope that many of our soldiers in Afghanistan have the same point of view as yourself. It is a very rare thing that you can see the point of view of the simple Afghan farmer and his need to survive, and put it in the proper context.
BTW Any of the Ian's a McLaughlin??

salam brother , did u really fought in afghanistan? if so....how is it really like there ?

tell me somthing brother, is it true that the forces fighting agains taliban are not there to fight terrorism but their real motive is to keep hold of the drug fields ? i just heard this on one of the documentaries, correct me if i am wrong,

Salam friends, yes, I was in Afghanistan just recently, and yes, I do beleive very strongly in the mission there.

TruthSeeker, to answer your first question, I could write volumes of books on it. I can relate though, the difference in the local's reception of us (the Canadian Forces) in Kandahar City and Zhari-Panjwai areas from the start of my tour (operation, or mission if you prefer) to the end. At first the reception was cold, and unwelcoming, but by the time we left, it was starting to More..warm up. We have to make more positive moves, and try to break away from the war fighting so that we can help Afghanistan rebuild, and leave (I would prefer to stay home with my family myself).

We are told while we are there on a daily basis that our mission is to help the Afghan people. We do this by helping the Afghan National Army in training (not just in war fighting, but in ethics as well, to prevent things like extortion and bribery), helping rebuild, and providing other reconstruction efforts such as demining. Unfortunatly we are seeing a lot of war fighting, and yes, we do try to take the fight to the Taliban in as far as the Taliban are doing to us.

Your second point concerning poppy fields. Heroine is a scurge in all of man kind's societies, it destroys life. The gut reaction is to burn the fields to the ground. But this does not do justice to individuals who are just trying to survive in very bad situations. The average poppy farmer in Afghanistan is not doing it by choice, but necessity. Sometimes under the gun. Sometimes because it is the only thing they can get to grow. We are trying very hard to find replacement crops, which the Afghan farmer could use to their advantage to feed their families. Poppy erradication is a priority for the coalition in Afghanistan, but not at the cost of Afghan civilian lives.

muhajroon, I hope that some day in my life time, soldiers are not required by any nation. However, people like judeadefender reinforce the fact that ignorance and intolerance will be traits of man kind for a time yet at any rate. Always remember, that not all Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, agnostics, pagans or atheists are bad or evil... But each will have some very small rot which will appear to speak for the many silent good. I will attack intolerant bigots regardless of religion or race, in the hope that someday, people will learn just a little tolerance, and go and actually learn something about their "targets". My time in Bosnia, especially in the enclave of Bihac formed a lot of the opinions I have today... Namely, there really is not much difference in any of God's creatures. It's just that some of us pray differently. I have a lot of respect, time and fond feelings for my Muslim brothers, and yet I consider myself the good (non pracitising)Christian. The wamrth, resiliance, and geniune friendliness of the Muslims I encountered in both Bosnia and Afghanistan will always leave a very good impression on me, and hence I find it easy to step in on these wrongs I see here... I just wish I had more time for it. Less..
