Central Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Tengah) is a province of Indonesia. It is one of five provinces in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. Its provincial capital is Palangkaraya and in 2010 its population was over 2.2 million, while the latest official estimate (for January 2014) is 2,368,654.
The population growth rate was almost 3.0% per annum between 1990 and 2000, one of the highest provincial growth rates in Indonesia during that time; in the subsequent decade to 2010 the average annual growth rate slowed markedly to around 1.8%. More than is the case in other province in the region, Central Kalimantan is populated by the Dayaks, the indigenous inhabitants of Borneo.
Since the eighteenth century the central region of Kalimantan and its Dayak inhabitants were ruled by the Muslim Sultanate of Banjar. Following Indonesian independence after World War II, Dayak tribes demanded a province separate from South Kalimantan province.
In 1957 South Kalimantan was divided to provide the Dayak population with greater autonomy from the Muslim population in the province. The change was approved by the Indonesian Government on 23 May 1957 under Presidential Law No. 10 Year 1957, which declared Central Kalimantan the seventeenth province of Indonesia. President Sukarno appointed the Dayak-born national hero Tjilik Riwut as the first Governor and Palangkaraya the provincial capital.
Pangkalan Bun or Pangkalanbuun is a city (population: around 200,000) in Central Kalimantan (Kalimantan Tengah) province on Borneo in Indonesia. It is the administrative headquarters of South Arut (Arut Selatan) district (kecamatan) and also the capital of West Kotawaringin Regency in the south-west part of central Kalimantan.
Pangkalan Bun is served by Iskandar Airport. Several airlines fly to this airport. Shipping services provide connections to Jakarta, Surabaya, and Semarang.
Birutė Galdikas established her base, Camp Leakey, for the study and conservation of orangutans about 30 miles (48 km) from Pangkalan Bun up the Sekonyer River. The site has expanded from the original hut in 1971. Its facilities, supported by the Orangutan Foundation International, are a part of the Tanjung Puting National Park.
Iskandar Airport is one of the operation centres being used to support search operations following the crash of AirAsia QZ 8501 on 28 December 2014 in nearby Karimata Strait. Shortly after the crash, the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS, or Badan SAR Nasional) established a post in Iskandar airport to coordinate the search. The head of the agency, Air Marshal Bambang Sulistyo, took close personal command of operations.
Central is an adjective usually referring to being in the center of some place or (mathematical) object.
Central may also refer to:
Tanjung Puting National Park is a national park in Indonesia located in the southeast part of West Kotawaringin Regency in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan (Central Borneo). The nearest main town is the capital of the Regency, Pangkalan Bun. The park is famous for its orangutan conservation.
The park is composed of 416,040 hectares of dryland dipterocarp forest, peat swampforest, heath forest, mangrove and coastal beach forest, and secondary forest.
Despite being a protected national park, approximately 65% of the park's primary forest is degraded. It is the loss of natural habitat that is the greatest threat to the wildlife. Friends of National Parks Foundation is an Indonesian NGO that has been working to restore the habitat in the Pasalat and Beguruh regions of the park since 1997. It also operates a conservation education centre in Pasalat.
Four research centers have been established within the park for the study and rehabilitation of orangutans and other primates. Camp Leakey, founded in 1971 with assistance from the Leakey Foundation, was the first of these centers. It was here where Dr. Birute Galdikas began her career studying the behavior of rescued and orphaned orangutans that were reintroduced into the wild. Her research was highlighted as the cover article of National Geographic in October 1975. Dr. Galdikas is now considered one of the world’s leading experts on orangutan behaviour and is the founder and president of the Orangutan Foundation International.

Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the natural wonders of the world. You may not believe this after you have been there only two days or three days, but after the fourth or fifth day something happens. The best known animals in Tanjung Puting are the orangutans, made famous through the long-term efforts of the Orangutan Research and Conservation Program (predecessor to OFI), based at the landmark Camp Leakey research station. Natural Sound Refugees from the violence gripping Central Kalimantan continue to pour into Indonesia's second largest city, Surabaya. Indonesian Borneo has been the scene of grisly attacks against ethnic Madurese immigrants, resented for their economic success. Tens of thousands are being shipped to Surabaya, next to Madura island, as evacuation is the solution chosen by the Jakarta government. Around 4-thousand refugees arrived on an overnight ship on Sunday, carrying what little possessions they managed to get on board. Many were suffering from shock and exhaustion. They were then taken by bus and boat to the island of Madura to be placed in holding camps. In the past two weeks, more than 450 Madurese settlers have been killed by Dayak natives on the Indonesian half of Borneo is...

Hardly surprisingly in the world’s largest archipelago, beaches are also a major draw. Aside from the obvious like Bali and Lombok, there are many other wonderful beaches in off-the-beaten-track locations. This island nation has some of the largest remaining tracts of tropical forest anywhere in the world, and is home to several beautiful scuba diving and snorkeling spots as well. An overview of the best places to visit in Indonesia: 1. Bali Bali is one of the world’s most popular island destinations and one which consistently wins travel awards. We stopped to visit the only other two options if you didn't want to cruise on a klotok, Rimba Lodge and a homestay. I loved the boat, small inconveniences and all and recommend the experience. President Joko Widodo is responding with new policies and institutional arrangements, including establishment of a new Peatland Restoration Agency. Meanwhile, private sector initiatives such as the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge have been met with controversy. Civil society has been frustrated with the slow pace of policy implementation.
