Woman stabbed

"A woman was wounded last night when she was stabbed in the chest. Mrs Marie Kinsella told detectives she was outside Erskineville Public School when a woman brushed against her. She felt a sharp pain, but did not know that she had been stabbed until she felt blood trickling down her side later. A motorist saw her stagger and drove her to Sydney Hospital where doctors found that a knife had entered her side."

Hollywood burns

"Hollywood, the 33-room guesthouse in Wallacia, was burnt down after 1am yesterday. The building was being renovated for Christmas and New Year, for which more than 200 guests had booked. Damage is estimated at £35,000. Only the caretaker and his wife and baby were in the grounds when the fire started. They were in an adjoining house. The Arson Squad believe the fire to be an accident."

Melbourne told: Save water

"As Melbourne continued to swelter in its heatwave, householders were warned that water supplies would be in danger unless consumption dropped. People were told to stop watering their gardens. The situation was described as the worst in memory. North Essendon reservoir supplies failed last night for the first time in history and failed again today. Households were without water and fire hydrants had no pressure."
