The Muslim Brotherhood is one of the oldest and most influential Islamic political movements in the world. But it has also been designated as a terrorist organisation by the country from which it originated - Egypt. And now the British Prime Minister David Cameron has ordered an inquiry into the Brotherhood's alleged links to terrorism following claims from Egypt and Saudi Arabia that the movement has been using London as an organising base for its activities. In the 18th century Europe's influence was growing. This was most notable in the Islamic world. As a response to this, many new Islamic scholars, activists and ideologist attempted to reform their societies and nations so they could prevent the growing presence of Europe. One of those reformists was Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani, his ideas preached of a modern state guided by Islamic principles. Although he was unsuccessful, his work strongly influenced the minds of thousands of activists, and one of those peoples was Hassan al-Banna, who would later on lay the foundation of the Muslim brotherhood.
In this report we take a look at the Muslim Brotherhood and its origins. How did this group expand throughout the region and what are its core principles? Are they attempting a world conquest or are they democratic?

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, during a period that witnessed a revival of religious fundamentalism and armed combat against Western, and in particular British occupation of the Arabian peninsula. According to al-Banna, contemporary Islam had become corrupted by Western influences. The ideas brought them to power, in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood was born and in most of the countries of the "Arab Spring" where aging nationalist dictators were deposed through popular uprisings. Initially keeping a distance from popular demands for democracy, the Brotherhood benefitted from their first democratic election when Mohammed Morsi came to power in Egypt in 2012 with 51% of the vote. To understand the movement today we look back on its history and ideas through interviews with founding leaders and analysts.

Muslim Brotherhood
The Society of the Muslim Brothers (Arabic: جماعة الإخوان المسلمين), shortened to the Muslim Brotherhood (الإخوان المسلمون al-Ikhwān al-Muslimūn), is a transnational Sunni Islamist organization founded in Egypt by Islamic scholar and schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna in 1928. The organisation gained supporters throughout the Arab world and influenced other Islamist groups such as Hamas with its "model of political activism combined with Islamic charity work", and in 2012 sponsored the elected political party in Egypt after the January Revolution in 2011. However, it suffered from periodic government crackdowns for alleged terrorist activities, and as of 2015 is considered a terrorist organization by the governments of Bahrain,Egypt, Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
The Brotherhood's stated goal is to instill the Qur'an and Sunnah as the "sole reference point for ... ordering the life of the Muslim family, individual, community ... and state." Its mottos include "Believers are but Brothers", "Islam is the Solution", and "Allah is our objective; the Qur'an is the Constitution; the Prophet is our leader; jihad is our way; death for the sake of Allah is our wish." It is financed by members, who are required to allocate a portion of their income to the movement, and was for many years financed by Saudi Arabia, with whom it shared some enemies and some points of doctrine.

As a response to this, many new Islamic scholars, activists and ideologist attempted to reform their societies and nations so they could prevent the growing presence of Europe. One of those reformists was Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani, his ideas preached of a modern state guided by Islamic principles. Although he was unsuccessful, his work strongly influenced the minds of thousands of activists, and one of those peoples was Hassan al-Banna, who would later on lay the foundation of the Muslim brotherhood.
In this report we take a look at the Muslim Brotherhood and its origins. How did this group expand throughout the region and what are its core principles? Are they attempting a world conquest or are they democratic?
