Jellyfish or jellies are the major non-polyp form of individuals of the phylum Cnidaria. They are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. The bell can pulsate for locomotion, while stinging tentacles can be used to capture prey.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Scyphozoans are exclusively marine, but some hydrozoans live in freshwater. Large, often colorful, jellyfish are common in coastal zones worldwide. Jellyfish have roamed the seas for at least 500 million years, and possibly 700 million years or more, making them the oldest multi-organ animal.
The English popular name jellyfish has been in use since 1796. It has traditionally also been applied to other animals sharing a superficial resemblance, for example ctenophores (members from another phylum of common, gelatinous and generally transparent or translucent, free-swimming planktonic carnivores now known as comb jellies) were included as "jellyfishes". Even some scientists include the phylum ctenophora when they are referring to jellyfish. Other scientists prefer to use the more all-encompassing term gelatinous zooplankton, when referring to these, together with other soft-bodied animals in the water column.
Box jellyfish (class Cubozoa) are cnidarian invertebrates distinguished by their cube-shaped medusae. Some species of box jellyfish produce extremely potent venom: Chironex fleckeri, Carukia barnesi and Malo kingi. Stings from these and a few other species in the class are extremely painful and can be fatal to humans.
"Box jellyfish" and "sea wasp" are common names for the highly venomous Chironex fleckeri. However, these terms are ambiguous, as "sea wasp" and "marine stinger" are sometimes used to refer to other jellyfish.
The medusa form of a box jellyfish has a squarish, box-like bell. From each of the four lower corners of this hangs a short pedalium or stalk which bears one or more long, slender, hollow tentacles. The rim of the bell is folded inwards to form a shelf known as a velarium which restricts the bell's aperture and creates a powerful jet when the bell pulsates. As a result, box jellyfish can move more rapidly than other jellyfish; in fact, speeds of up to six meters per minute have been recorded.

While surfing in Peru, I discovered incredible numbers of very large and mean jellyfish, and couldn't resist the opportunity to try on a "jellyfish sombrero". Crystal Jellyfish -- The creature is found in the waters off the west coast of North America. The species is totally colorless … in daylight it looks crystal clear. You can get a sense of that clarity in the picture by Matt Stansfield. Crystal jellies are known to be bioluminescent, capable of producing quick flashes of blue and green light. Some of that ability is shown in the photo from Gary Kavanagh. The bioluminescence is created by an interaction of proteins that creates a blue-green light which is re-emitted as a green light. Scientists have inserted the animal’s gene that contains the green fluorescent protein into mice … When hit with blue light, those rodents glow green! Moon Jellyfish -- This label encompasses several species. They’re usually translucent, up to 16 inc...

Discovery Channel - Attack Of The Giant Jellyfish (Documentary) There's an invasion underway: An army of brainless, bloodless phantoms, billions strong, is taking over our oceans, destroying our food supply, and turning our beaches into battle zones. It's not the same without him here
Twenty years of him dead and gone
This Vodka does a memory clear
Though it's too hard to imagine what these tears are for
A walking poster boy for all that's good
He got swallowed by the cracks before he understood
She likes to think he loved her but it hurts so bad
'Cause now she knows she's wrong
It always seemed to strike her strange
His working late until the morning, spending so much cash
And the sweet smell of his angel's hair
That seemed to cling to his lips just like a wax mustache
A walking monument to DNA
Making love under the podium at the P.T.A.
He's the principal of principles, this love gone bad
'Cause now she knows she's wrong
It hardly seems worth it, baby
Too late in asking why
He juggled his honesty
With two balls and an alibi
Now she knows that
Now she knows that
Now she knows she's wrong
A walking poster boy for all that's good
He got swallowed by the cracks before he understood
